Food allergy questions

My 2 year old cane corso has recently been suffering with a skin condition. She is red, puffy and itchy all of the time. I have taken her to the vet. She has been given antibiotics, antihistamines and checked for mites. Nothing has helpedd her except cutting grains and chicken from her diet. I am considering cooking for my dog. At this point I think I need complete control over what goes into my dogs food. I have looked at some recipes online but some of them seem sketchy. I am looking good for some good chicken free recipes that have been successfully used by other cane corso owners. Thanks!

My BM had horrible allergies. No kibble worked for her. When I put her on a raw diet she no longer had ichies or hot spots. Oddly enough, chicken was the base of the raw diet that worked for her. Good luck, it is no fun for anyone!

Try giving her some quality dry food that hasnt got any chicken , many dogs had their allergy problems solved by switching to food containing only fish protein. And if that doesnt work then you could try with raw. Its less cost and much healthier for her health and cheaper to try first changing her food then going to vet for shots. That is only my opinion but good luck with anything you decide.

Try to find a food that is grain free, no potatoes, no chicken, no poultry. Cut out all treats unless you are feeding 1-2 ingredient freeze dried or cooked meat. Bathe with a medicated shampoo, dry the coat thoroughly and clean ears regularly and try not to use sprays and stuff on carpet or furniture.

If you want to do a home-prepared diet, I highly recommend you research "whole prey model raw" as the basis. You can do a cooked home diet, but you'll need all sorts of supplements to balance out the nutrients lost due to high heat (i.e. cooking). If you feed raw, it's EASY: add liver, kidney and other organs as available (all in their natural, raw state) - at approximately 10% total of the diet (the rest being meat, both boneless and bone-in), and no other vitamin pills are needed.

There's a whole sub-forum here under diet and nutrition dedicated to feeding a raw diet, and many of us have gone that direction.

I agree that preparing your own food is the best way to know exactly what your pup is eating... and, I've found it addictive, too... but... I can be a control freak at times. :)

Our puppy was also itchy when she was little and eating kibble. She improved a lot just by adding fish oil... we used the human capsules from Costco (Wild Alaska Salmon Oil), and gave her 4x a human dose for a few weeks, then backed off to 2x a human dose for long-term maintenance. Once we went raw and added whole sardines to her meals (fresh/frozen, not canned), we didn't need the fish oil anymore.
