First EM, rescued

Any advice is much welcomed.

We adopted an EM from a shelter, have had him less then a week. Going for a vet check later in the week, so should know more then. He was surrendered as a rescue, guy who surrendered him had him for 4 months, putting weight on him and was on an antibiotic for a skin infection, he didn't want to anymore so gave him up. Not sure of his history prior to that.

He's estimated at about 2yrs. Last known weight was 141 lbs. He looks thin to me, and seems kind of week but not in pain.

Eating: we have another dog also (beagle/bassett) we've always free fed him. Is this okay for the EM at this time? He's eating the kibble, not much, seems like he's hungry still. I think he's use to table food, doesn't really beg for it but will gobble it if given. What's a good/healthy way to get him eating more. I'm willing to give him nutritional human food if need be but don't want to only do scraps that'll just go in and out the other end. Also want the end result to be kibble but if extra is needed now that's fine. I haven't noticed any food aggression but if you walk by him eating he gets timid and leaves it. But he'll also let my 2 yr old feed him one peice at a time, supervised of course.

Manners: overall he acts as he's longing for attention and to be part of the family. I think he was kenneled or left alone a lot. Not sure if he's been really trained or just partially and who knows how long ago. He's not attached to the name we were told it doesn't phase him at all. He'll come to the "kissing" sound. He don't sit on command or anything. But will wait until I go thru the outside door and invite him in or out before he goes. And if outside sits soon as he gets near me. Timid of hubby so I think a man must have done something to him. At night after kids are in bed he comes up for his lovin but I stop and his paw comes up... how do I correct this? I can't have him pawing with little kids.

He hasnt barked, growled, nipped, nothing since having him and that includes when my 2 yr old tripped and fell on him.

Advice on anything would be appreciated. I'm not new to large dogs or rescued animal, just been awhile. Had a st Bernard and when younger my mom was always rescuing some animal, mostly foundered horses.

I'll post a side and top pic when I get it.
