We work dogs in every venue psa, hunting, dock diving,pp, tracking, completion obedience, etc etc. we have bred working line shepherds and knpv line Malinois for over ten years. We have imported dogs from Czech, west Germany, Netherlands, Philippines, all over the USA, Russia, and will be importing a bad ass jagd terrior from Slovak in late may. I say this because never in any of the breeds or people we dealt with have we had so much trouble finding what we wanted and needed. With filas it seems everyone is an expert everyone talks crap about someone's dogs or kennels. And no one has or seems to know where to get it. I have shepherds and mals with more ojeriza then the dogs I've seen and met. Every time I go to a kennel "ohh these dogs know your not a threat that's why you can come in the yard.. I can't let you test this dog because she bites hard and I don't want you to get hurt..

I myself was going to go to cafib show in Brazil or east coast but who would I talk to lol. I'm going to go to Evey iabca show, arba show, and a few shows in Mexico and see if I can meet and greet with those with alike minds as myself.

We got into filas about 6 years ago or so- started reading, researching, doing hours and hours of homework. We then went visited a few kennels, talked to numerous people I mean well over 20 people for long periods of time, including breeders in Brazil, and Cape Verde, obviously the USA

Between our club we have four filas none of which I would be proud of if I had bred them but they are really good dogs. I don't want good dogs, I want the best dogs.

I would deem the best fila for me as

Great temperment with its family
Strong nerve
Extreme oj
Moderate prey
High defense
Extreme civl drives
Nice size
Strong bone
Early development of temperment (our game dogs and game dog mixes show early signs of temp then what I have seen thus far)
A need and want to work
Zero dog agressive behavior
Higher intelligence level then what I'm seeing
Better Trainability

This is like my friend said a tall order but can be achieved if the fila community would work together and not apart from one another. Once I have found a foundation stock we will produce this type of fila, won't be over night but believe you me we will produce this and consistently with uniformity in every litter.

BH-K9 You have to make some friends, do your research, and take your time. Good filas are a true gift. It matters what you are looking for specifically. Read my post on the difference between "ojeriza" and true real guarding temp, and then if you want to throw in Prey drive, pack your lunch. This is a secretive breed, do you think you are gonna find the best lines by asking on here? Or picking off websites. Dig thru the BS and take time to really learn. Chuck doesn't even have papers for his female, and she is a "mongrel" black to boot that has prey drive and could out work most Filas hands down, what does that tell you.

We have from what most people call a crap breeder puppy mill dog.

She chases anything that moves- chickens, work the flirt pole with moderate intensity, has begun blood trailing and with success 40-80 yards. Will fetch a toy, chases squirrels in the back yard, goes off on her own while in the woods or streets. She excepts so far everyone, will guard if someone makes the wrong type of movement, she I would say this far belongs in the category as true guarding temp with low- no ojeriza but is still very young.

You give me a dog with anytype of drive I'll work it in that drive and bring out the secondary drive it's lacking, this is just dog training. My problem is I can't find a breeder that wants the total package which is sad IMO.

A 100lb plus dog that hates anyone that's not family, will let my kids chew on its ear and poke it in the eye, work all day and night, chase down something as fast as a shepherd in comparison to size, loves my family and that's it, fears nothing, and does this without hours and hours of training and field work is something that excited me and still does.

Long live the true fila the real fila the one and only fila!!

I would say you by and large have two kinda fila owners and breeders. One is the guy wanting to make money. I know I know, it's all about the breed.... Thats few and far between IMO. And the guy who's working his dogs and might have a few left over. The second is the guy you want. Thats also the guy no one knows unless they know them. And they wont give you a dog unless they know you or maybe someone they trust gives you high marks. I mean there are guys like dogman who might turn out a good litter one time. But most fila folks who have pups, everyone knows they have pups, having pups is what they do, eh, it's a crap shoot. I'd rather have a ugly beast then a pretty pansy. And thats where the farm dogs have the advantage. The guy breeding them dont care bout ear set as top priority, they care about the workability. Hell a grand champ dont mean nothing but the dog looks good and has been through so many temp test he aint fazed a lick.

So what kennels did you visit?? How many filas do you have or have you owned? When you start breeding these man stoppers, who you going to sell them to? What do you do with the filas in your club?

That's pure gold right there. If you consistently bred filas with this temperament, which is pretty much what its suppose to be according to the breed standard; I would tell you to shut up and take my money lol.

They used to be bred that way 20 years ago but since then the breed seems to have gone the way of the "bigger is better" attitude. My filas range in weight from 110-128 and can do the job they were bred for all day long, i like the blood i have, once you have a fila with super strong nerves, you wont want to get away from it. Steve is like a bomb proof horse, nothing fazes him, i can do anything with this dog and he is stedfast and a true fila in temp and extreme brains. And his kids are the same way, they take everything i throw at them in stride and also very smart fast learners but have a stubborn streak from their mother, if they want something they are very persistant in annoying you or another dog until they get their own way and their personalitys are something else , so humanish its scary, yup can ya tell i love my cbkc filas lol. Great prey drive as well but yet they live with 2 cats that they do give a chase after them ever now and again but great respect is given to them, now a stray cat is a different story lol. So yes they do exist, you just have to know what blood produces those qualitys and go from there and to do that you need to go back about 20-25 years to the breeders that were breeding back then , even if they are not breeding anymore they should be able to tell you were they blood is today, thats only IF they were a serious breeder, not one of these one or 2 litters and then gone breeder.

Out of respect to the kennels we visited I'd rather not give specifics
Two in southern ca
One in northern ca
One in Texas
A hobbyist breeder in Fresno, ca
Mexico

I currently have one fila, my friend and club member who's my shadow lol has two -all five of us are always together we almost live together so I'd consider myself as owning three filas.

When I start breeding I'd say we produce a litter a year, let's say average of 10 pups. We have 18 members in our club 12 of which want a fila that will come from a breeding I produced. I have over 20 associate friends that would be willing to co own a fila with me and raise him or her so I can see how temp and structure of the dogs end up in order to decide if they could be part of my program. I have always only bred for myself and club and only bred when I couldn't find what I/we wanted in a certain breed. When I say breed I'm not talking about numerous litters a year or even two litter a year I'm saying selectively breeding my version of what I would consider ideal for me and I'm extremely selective. For me two decide a male and female are good enough to breed temp, health, and lineage matches up well is rare. Give an example I have bred Malinois, and working shepherds since 2005 I have produced two litters of Malinois, and one litter of gsds. I aim for perfection and would rather have 5 of the best productions then 50 o.k dogs attached to my name.

Our club we mainly do pp with filas, with the new pup we have been doing scent work, o.b, and pp... This is the first pup we have had the other filas came from people that couldn't keep them for different reasons. So this is the first time we had a blank slate and we are able start the dog off right.

Teaching pup to be neutral to gun fire, confident on all types of services, developing prey drive, heavy obedience, early scent work right now we are doing blood trails, and scent trails to see if we can tap into that blood hound nose. And for the bonding and exposure we will start showing in June at the Antioch show-- well Tavares will show the new pup lol I don't get along well with show people and the politics.

I know this is more of a pet forum but I'm a working dog enthusiast, if it doesn't work it can't live with me and that includes four legged and two legged creatures.

How's the prey drive on your boy?
Lol lets just day I'm not find of windy weather, if there is bag or a leaf rolling with the wind nearby, my boy is on it. It Used to be really bad but he is more hesitant to chase after leaves abd bags cause he knows I don't like that behavior and that it's not alive.

A friends aus sheperd mix could catch and kill upwards of 5 or 6 a day in christmas tree fields near me (which is amazing feat since with trees spaced every 5.5 feet, line of sight is difficult if the rabbit were to zig or zag. when I am out with my filas in trees I normally see the rabbits in distance and the dogs don't see them and the rabbits run off before the dogs even pick up a scent. they like to chase deer though
