This is awesome. I have more and more respect for this breed. The first I had ever heard of them was a picture and a small paragraph about them in an old carl semencic book that my grandpa had laying around. I forgot all about it till I was researching the breed and remembered seeing the same picture.

Thanks guys. The reason I said that it was for the ones that dont belive Filas still work is because there was a discussion about the look of the Fila recently. The argument was that as long as it has Fila temperament than that is all that matters and looks are not important. I stated that The Fila looks the way it looks not because someone wanted it to look like that but because of the work that it has perfromed, you know, form follows function and function follows form.. ie longer ear make for a better tracker, longer snout= more wind etc, etc. well the issue was brought up that they dont do ANY of their original work anymore except for guarding so what is the point of their looks now... well, they do still work in their original field so their look must remain the same so they are able to continue working in that capacity. Also the rottweiler was used to pull carts but who the hell uses them for cart pulling now? the point is, if you get a breed dont bastardize it to make it fit what you want, just get a different breed that already fits what you want... all Im saying.

I am in a agreement with you Juan. Coming from a working dog background currs and ab's for hogs. A few apbt's in there as well. It seems to me that the fila is a very well suited multi purpose dog. Hunting livestock protection it can do it all.

I dont think any of us said filas dont work anymore, what i think your trying to say is that only cafib filas are working dogs. I dont think you were around when i had my farm and sent in numerous pics of my cbkc filas working my livestock, hogs, cattle, sheep and goats and many many ducks and chickens, my one fila also only had 3 legs and he was my best stock dog lol. These were city raised filas before we moved to the farm and they had no issues of attacking the animals, they were so easy to train and never had any worries about them hurting one of my animals. They also helped me locate my free range egg layers nests in the long grass, their reward was an egg so they liked playing that game lol. I got to see alot of natural instinct come out in my filas when we moved to the farm, was there for 8 years so got to experience alot with my dogs. Also back then there were alot of fila owners in the US that did participate in the livestock herding instinct tests, i do believe Suzy took her filas, cbkc filas and her dogs preformed quite well, as well as other cbkc filas, that you consider to be mutts, they also passed there temperament tests as well with flying colors.

Also when you were stating about the looks of the fila, no where in either standard does it call for a long ear, i do believe it says large thick and v shaped, inset at eye level and to the rear of the head. The old black and white pics i have seen of filas do not show long houndy ears as the cafib dogs of today have. It seems like every year the ears get longer and the head narrower, in my opinion they are losing the molossoid look to them.

Mountain... I think you read just a tad bit too much into what I wrote. first off I was referring to exactly what I wrote... someone said that the look of the fila does not need to be continued as it doesnt perform the same job duties as it had in the past and that it's traditional look is no longer as important as the actual temperament because the fila only works as a guard nowadays. I did not mention CAFIB or non CAFIB here at all. Remember I have always said that there are more than just a few non CAFIB filas with proper fila temp and ofcourse there are some with proper instinct as well. Aussies/border collies are great herders, drivers and have a natural distrust of strangers as well and they look completely different then a fila does and just because they do similar work than a fila does not make them a fila. Remember the fila developed over a natural process and have form a distinctive look due to their environment and the work that they performed. longer/larger it means the same, larger does not mean elephant like on a fila. Dogs with longer ears do have an advantage when tracking and that is a known fact. The fact that other dogs that dont have droopy ears can also track does not take away from the fact that longer ears makes for a better tracker. You mention Suzy (Girldogue) but remember that she now has CAFIB filas for a reason and it is doubtful that she will ever go back that other route. I dont see what you are saying about that CAFIB dogs have longer ears now, CAFIB does have an infatuation with the ears and the ear set because filas have been being born with very small ears compared to the dogs of yesterday. CAFIB does not want abnormally long ears but the proper length is desired. Also the heads of CAFIB dogs are not getting narrower and it is considered a huge fault for any Fila to have a narrow head especially in males. Now if you mean that some do have narrower heads then yes, ofcourse but that happens in every breed and ofcourse that is not considered ideal. Like i keep saying it must me balanced and not exaggerated in any proportion. Here is a picture of "Lord", an old CAFIB type dog and a current CAFIB style dog. I dont see hound although the influence of the bloodhound is obvious I do see molossor and that too is pretty evident. notice the ears are not excessive on either.

Right Juan Keep the info coming. You promised lots of photos of the 2012 US expo lets see them. Lets at least see the "champ". I would encourage everyone to look at the 2011 "champ" and the rest of the dogs there to see the "wonderful conformation" but I see you removed those pics. Lets see this years batch, its been quite as a mouse since the show.

I actually had to put my photos in "private" as well as my videos because unfortunately they ended up on other people's websites as their own stock and they were attempting to sell pups using the pics and videos that I and others have taken in order to dupe people into sending them money and then ofcourse they would not send them a dog as they dont own the dogs they advertised. My own dogs even appeared on an EBAY classifieds ad. Ace, you know I had my photobucket AND my youtube videos on public and I even put out my passwords for people to take the pictures and use them as they wished... Because of my actions (although well intentioned) others were able to use this information to defraud others and I was forced to block people. So unfortunately, due to these events I have had to hold back on some pics. The champion of the CAFIB expo in 2012 is "Vudu" Valentina de Itanhandu owned by Shawna Lopez, temperament winner Is "Rio" (dont remember his papered name but his is out of Umiri de itanhandu and Quixaba de Itanhandu) he is owned by Ulyssis in Albany, NY. There are plenty of pictures up on the CAFIB USA facebook page as well as Fila 411 however i will not be sharing pictures as freely as I used to. BTW ACE, you would REALLY like Vudu, she is a VERY strong bitch.
