Female in heat

Hello I have a female mastiff that is 9 months old and went into heat last night. I was wondering if any one had any advise for me as this is the first time for me as well. (so far we haven't let her around our male)

First week 'coming in', second week 'in', third week 'going out'. Keep away from all males, somewhere around the 13-18 days of the heat. We just went thru our second heat and are looking forward to getting Snookums fixed. Diapers did not work for us. Yes there is some mess, they are big dogs. Try old blankets or throw rugs you can wash often.

When Crickett was in heat she became even more of a cuddle bug than she normally is. She also had low energy and just laid around lots. I noticed she didn't want to pee either, she got pretty swollen and I think it was uncomfortable for her to go. We used panties on her most of the day, but she didn't bleed much so I would take them off here and there to give her a break. She was obsessed with cleaning herself also. I also put down old blankets in our family room to avoid any messes.

Well we are almost done with week 2 and she is still spotting and still swollen. Mess has not been bad but we are leaving to go out of town next week and she will be kenneled ..was really hoping to be done with this before then.
