Feeding

Hello, four month ago I got a English Mastiff puppy. I have heard so many different things about how long to feed her puppy food. I have heard they should be taken off of it at four months, six months, and 18 months. Is there a "right" time? I would love to get some advice from other mastiff owners. Thanks.

I feed all stages Acana Grasslands, most puppy foods are too high in protein for me to be comfortable with. :)

I am feeding my 9 wk old Female EM Science Diet Large Breed, 26% Protein, I believe. What is a good percentage of Protein for a growing EM.

thanks,

Science Diet! :scared2:

I dont recommend Science Diet for any breed... but especially not for giant breeds as its first ingredient is 'whole grain corn' which is NOTHING but a filler. Look for a brand with little to no grains. If you read the ingredients in science diet there isnt anything very 'wholesome' in it... I like TOTW(Taste Of The Wild) & Blue Buffalo

I second Taste of The Wild

This site is a good guideline, but be careful as many of the higher 6 star foods are way to high in protein for a large breed puppy. Ideally you want to stick to the mid 20% .
Have fun...(that was sarcastic, lol, the food sucks until you find the right one)

Thanks for the advice. I will get her off of this asap. You guys are awesome.

BTW..I have seen one store in Lubbock (where I am from) that carries TOTW. They do not have Large Breed either. Could you guys recommend a more "well-know" brand that most stores would carry that you would feel comfortable feeding an EM?

TOTW doesn't come in a large breed formula. It is an all-life stage dog food so you can feed right from puppy-hood onward.

Black Shadow is right, its for all stages of life. Also gradually transission from her old food to TOTW so you do not upset her tummy.

Hello all...

I've read the rule of thumb 20-25% protein rule on a lot of sites. I was wondering...should this percentage stay the same through the entire life of the dog or does it increase/decrease with age? I have a 10 month old Corso on Wellness Large Breed puppy (4 cups) and Evo Red Meat Kibble (1 cup).

Thanks! =)

generally, once they stop their long-bone growth (for mastiffs generally around a year of age, i believe), you dont have to worry as much about the protein levels (unless your dog has kidney problems). My adult dogs eat EVO herring and salmon and it's 42% protein and they do fantastic on it. I feed puppies less than 30% (TOTW Pacific Stream). You're probably getting close to the age with your dog where you can not worry so much about protein consumption, but I'd give it a few more months just to be safe...
