Fatty lump on elbow

I have noticed a fatty lump on the back of Sampsons leg right at the elbow..... am freaking out!! It is not preventing him from walking and it doesn't seem to bother him but am taking him to the vet to get it looked at. He is only 10 months old and I swear I feel like we visit the vet for the weirdest stuff. Has anyone else had one of these fatty lumps on their dog and if so did you take them to the vet? What did the vet do with it? I would like to have it removed if I can but I hate putting him through that if I don't have to. I also read online (probably my 1st mistake) that these fatty lumps could come back even after being removed. Anyone have any experience with this? I really appreciate any info anyone could give. Thanks in advance.

We had the exact same thing put it appeared on a Saturday night so we had to wait it out till Monday. By Monday, it was almost gone. We mentioned it to the vet at the next visit and he said that we got lucky, that most take weeks or months to disappear....if they do at all. If it doesn't start to fade, I would have it looked at.

I would certainly get it checked by a vet if it doesnt go away but I wouldn't get too worried in the mean time. Lots of dogs get fatty cysts and they are no problem.

@ Appa's Mom I have noticed that it gets smaller and then bigger and smaller and then bigger. I thought at first my eyes were playing tricks on me but they weren't. I am going to go out a limb and say that it gets bigger during the day from him walking and then shrinks over night. Last night it was big and this morning it is much smaller so am guessing him walking must irritate it. I am going to get it checked regardless so I guess I ll see what the vet says.

Our German Shepherd developed one on his underbelly about 8 months ago. We took him in did blood work, biopsied it and all that good stuff. His turned out to be just that a fatty tumor under the skin. The vet said it is not uncommon and it could be removed, sometimes they return sometimes they don't. Kaos (our German Shepherd) due to age and health was not a good candidate for the removal surgery and it doesn't impair him so we left it alone. Hope all is well!

Is the lump sqwishy? It could be an elbow hygroma which is like a water balloon and is normally caused from laying on hard surfaces. Being that Sampson is 10 mnths old and hasn't built the callouses yet.

Our 16 month old came out with one last month. I bought the dog leggs harness which has helped immensely if its a hygroma. Let me post a pict of her elbow hygroma.

No worries if it is this it isn't a hereditary thing or health issue.

The harness has helped immensely but must be worn as much as possible and for 7 weeks . The harness must be comfy because she willingly wears it and only comes off for walks,to be washed or at a show. It's been 4 weeks of her wearing it now and the hygroma is almost gone. Another thing is rubbing Dmso horse linament on it helps but you'll also smell garlic when the dog sweats.

Also, If it is a hygroma, Do not get it drained. That could cause other issues.

Here's a picture of how the harness protects the dogs elbows.

@ Douge lover you are right on with the way it looks and I think your right its from him laying on the floor. It is sqwishy!! He has so any things to lay on that are soft but he loves to lay on the floor. He doesn't go down easy though he just throws himself. May I ask where you got the elbow protector from? I would like to get one and see if it helps him.

They love the hard surfaces because it's cooler and how they thrash themselves down is soo true. I purchased the dog leggs harness from the dog leggs place online. Make sure to take proper measurements and tell them he's a growing puppy. I'd like another one also because she wears it everyday. I wash it and it's getting worn out from so much wear but still functions just looks ragged. I've even incorporated her halloween costumes around it. Look at her today and how hairy and dried foam slobbered it is.

I had this happen one of my dogs. Ended up having to pack rice in a sock and warm it up (sounds odd lol) and hold it on the elbow. It did help it go down.

Neomama- Lucy says thanks!

Moose- I read about the heated rice bags also but if they continue to throw themselves or lay on hard surfaces it will never heal.

We keep her harness on so we don't have to constant watch that she isn't laying on hard surfaces. Last night she had a bathtub night again. I'm not about to get up in the middle of the night to kick her out of it when i'm sleeping. I'd rather tolerate the noise of her movement against the porcelain bathtub till she's in comfy. I feel confident her harness is healing and protecting her elbow as much as possible.

Puppypaws- Your welcome!

Ya, my friends CC has that as well.
He has the had the harness on for a while now and it is almost gone. The same thing, the doofus throws himself down on the floor.
The hardest part for her is keeping him off hard surfaces, and getting him to lay down softly.
Good luck :)

I ordered one of those harnesses and I hope it will be here soon. I have been all over him to stay off the floor and sleep either in his bed, my bed, or on the couch. I dont care where he lays right now just so that thing goes away. He at least listens to where I tell him to go :) It looks a little better today so I hope this harness works even better when we get it. Thanks so much for the help.

Good to hear. I joked and said by the time the harness gets here i'll have her trained to not lay on hard surfaces. I'd chase my girl also so she wouldn't lay on hard surfaces but it's impossible when the majority of our home is all tile.

The harness came fast for us so hopefully it will for yous also. Let us know how it worked.

I got Lillie when she was 4 months and she had a hygroma on her front right elbow. I later learned that where she came from had hardwood floors so she must of been flopping down. I didn't do anything for her elbow, no harness or anything I just made sure she had lots of soft places to lay on and it went away on it's own. I was told to do nothing to it and it would go away.

Well I have wonderful news. I got Sampson some of those "Leggs" and he is going on his 2nd week of wear them and the hygroma is going down. The first hour was rough as he didn't understand why he was wearing some weird things on his legs but I rubbed his tummy for a while and when he got up and started to walk around he was ok. Took about 30 minutes to get him to stop walking funny. Now he sleeps with it on during the day only and we only take them off at night. He does great with them and even wait for me in the morning to get them ready to get put on. Thanks everyone for your help. This dog has me wrapped around his paw pretty tight and when something is not right am a mess. Again I appreciate all the help everyone gave!! :)

i may have to order some soon. hannibal has them on both his elbows (one side is worse than the other). they seem to have sprung up almost overnight. maybe we just don't pay that much attention to his elbows? and why will they never ley of the soft surfaces? he has his choice of two couches, a thick fluffy blanket we keep for him in the kitchen, all of the carpeted areas of the house (everywhere but the kitchen and bathrooms), and our memory foam bed - but he always flops down HARD on the linoleum kitchen floor (avoiding the blanket).

for tonight, i just cut the crotch out of some old leggings (for his head to go through), cut the legs down a bit, and wrapped some old socks around the elbows themselves. i want to see how well he'll tolerate wearing that before i spend $150 on the harness. if he keeps from totally destroying it for a couple of days, i'll order one.

Dogue lover I have a Tosa/Dogue Mix that suffers from this. Where did you find that harness? I would love to get this for Hooch. Thank you! Beautiful Dogue by the way!
