Eye boogers?

I have seen this a lot in our EM. More frequently when he was younger, but it still happens. It seems to be common in Neopolitan Mastiffs because of the shape of the eye. I believe there are a few threads on "droopy" eyes. Generally not uncommon in Mastiffs unless it‘s caused by something else in your dog.

TylerDurden makes a good point about the tightness of the eye and the incidence of eye discharge. My tight eyed dogs seem to have less discharge generally. I don't think his eyes look very loose, but maybe it's the angle. I know that with mine, increase in eye boogers usually happens at certain times of the year and mostly with the dogs that have allergies of some sort. More boogers in spring and fall, and sometimes if I've tried a food that doesn't really agree with them. If his eyes were irritated looking and red and the texture of the discharge looked different then I might say he had an infection, but his eyes look healthy to me. Is he having any other issues? Itchy feet or anything like that?

Besides being a jerk? No other issues. :) Well that makes me feel better. I knew worms can give dogs discharge and was worried about that. Thanks for the info!

Hahahaha, Alou. I've never heard of intestinal parasites causing eye discharge. Can you give more information about that? Eye worms would be something different and I have zero info about, or experience with, that. I wouldn't think that's a concern here though. If you're concerned about intestinal parasites, you can have a stool sample done or you can get some food grade diatomaceous earth and give him that. It must be food grade.

I don't have details on the worm issue. I just recall going to a GSD breeder years ago and saw pups with greenish eye boogers. The breeder told me they had worms. I really have no reason to believe my CC has any health issues other than that little anecdotal piece of info. However, I have been keeping him outside for the past 2 weeks where I have a barrel filled with goldfish and a turtle. The water is not filtered so it's green. My CC loves drinking out of it and won't drink from the fresh water bowl I give him. That can't be good for him! He knows it's wrong but he does it anyway. I've dumped a lot of the water out, making it impossible (I think) for him to reach in to drink. I haven't seen any negative side effects yet but I am a little worried.

Lots of things can cause green eye discharge, some conditions worse than others, but I'm almost positive that there wasn't a correlation between the intestinal worms and the eye discharge. I don't think you need to worry about that. As the for water - there are a lot of water borne parasites that can be present in water like that. Some types of algae can also be toxic. I'm not sure if there could be a bloom in a barrel, but I would do whatever it takes to make sure he can't get to the water from now on. They sure do make us worry, don't they?

Yeah all I can do is wait and see if he gets sick. As if i don’t have enough to worry about already with a 2 year old kid and a colicky infant! Think positive...think positive....Well, at least he doesn’t eat poop so there’s that....

That looks like "normal" eye boogers - nice and clear. If they turn green, you might want to think about a vet visit, that might (might) be something worse than just dust irritation. (I'm thinking bacterial infection versus worms, though.)

We've had a LOT of smoke in the are from wildfires here, so lots of eye boogers keeping the ash washed out.

If they bother you - you can get some human tear-replacement eye-drops - JUST saline (no "get the red out" junk) - and flush his eyes every morning, or as needed. If it's an irritation causing the boogers, that can help.

Denna STILL eats poop... so... yeah, it'd be nice to not have to worry about that! I've noticed it depends on what she's had to eat... so I know what days I have to clean up after her ASAP. Luckily (?) it's only her OWN poop that she finds delectable.

DeenasMom, I'm not really concerned about it cosmetically. Just being cautious I guess. Hmm....speaking of poop, I've been keeping him outside for 2 weeks and there really isn't much poop in the backyard. The ones I do find are about half his normal deposit. Could it be that he's burning more calories from the mere fact of being in the hot Houston heat all day, thereby utilizing more of the nutrients and leaving less waste?

P.S. He's always in the shade and not baking, unless he decides to sunbathe for some weird reason.
