Extreme diarrhea

give his gut a break , his stomach probably feels better so he acts better . don't overfeed him by volume , that will give him diarrhea in itself ...i'd underfeed him for a 4-5 days until he was normal ....... boneless skinless chicken breast and rice is not nutritionally sufficient over the long term , i'd get him back on his food a little at a time over the next 3 days ............. just because he had one clear fecal does not necessarily mean he is clear ........... if he doesn't clear up or has chronic diarrhea , and is otherwise healthy , i'd take a good look for coccidia .

Ok so I started adding a small amount of kibble to the chicken and rice. I was so scared, but his poos are firming up with the addition of the kibble. I think I cooked the rice and chicken too soft? His poos didn't start to firm up until adding the kibble. We will see. If this doesn't clear in the next few days we will be off to the vets. Honestly I believe it was the greasy pig ears.

Going back to the vet today after work. Poops back to being liquid after adding in the kibble and they never got fully solid on the rice and chicken, but I figured it was because the food was soft. I'm so disgusted. I google Authority puppy food and diarrhea and it has a ton of different people saying they experienced the same thing. I feel certain that he must have a sensitive stomach.

Mine had very loose stools, but not diarrhea, on their old food but this seems to have resolved itself on the new food (Earthborn Holistic Meadow Feast). I think that EM's have issues with chicken.

Sooo the seller finally got back to us. They were feeding Kibbles and Bits. I really want to just go get that to put an end to the diarrhea, but I know that's a bad food. Maybe the problem is the Chicken.

I'm afraid to switch.

When I think of diarrhea I think of almost a water consistancy...is it that or just very loose not well formed stools? If it's the later then I would suggest you switch to something without chicken and possibly grains. If you read through the threads on the forum there are a lot of people who note their Mastiff's have issues with grains or chicken. Worth a try...maybe buy a small bag. And my girls LOVE the taste.

Before I switch him to rice and chicken it was like a water consistency. With just the chicken and rice it is like the consistency of thick soup or gruel. With the addition of the dog food it firmed a little with the first meal, less than a handful of kibble. By the second meal far more loose. I've never had puppy with such a sensitive stomach.

If you are still having problems I really urge you to go back to the vet. I agree with Marke another look for coccidia. Very common in puppies and very common to get false negatives.

We are going to the vet today when I get off work. I have already called my vet. Should I ask them to check for this or will this just be automatic? lol I feel like I have a baby.

I would ask them to check for it. While it should be routine, I've learned that it is better to speak up. It is very common in puppies.

My pups had giardia and loose stools. Bella just had a bout of diarrhea on Monday that cleared quickly, I think she probably just ate something. Mine get bananas and carrots everyday and I think the bananas help firm things up a bit. I've also had them on probiotics for a week which seem to help. Good luck and maybe it's time for a second opinion.

Ok We had a break through today people! lol. I feel so weird hunting for poos. So I don't know if this is good are not. I fasted him for 8 hours. I went to petsmart and returned the dog food. They suggested Simply Nourish puppy food. It is a limited ingredient diet. The main ingredients are salmon and sweet potato. No grain no chicken. Its hard to find a chicken free food!

I fed just this food to him and his poo was a bit running the first go, but have firmed up today! I checked the dog food advisory and this puppy food has 5 stars. So I'm going to give it little more time. If his poo doesn't firm completely then off to the vets Friday or Saturday morning. Does this sound good? The Lady at petsmart said a chicken allergy will be hard to manage because chicken is a cheap protein and its found in almost all dog food and treats in some form.

So glad his poo has firmed up. I use the Earthborn Holistic treats and another grain and chicken free treat I get at a small local pet food store. The big box stores don't seem to carry these treats. Might be worth it to check out the smaller stores. They also seem to know more about the food then the big box. IMO

I got to this thread late but I was going to say stop feeding all this extra stuff and find a good grain free kibble and don't feed him so much. Most ppl stress out about runny poop and start doing rice and chicken and whatever else when all they needed to do is cut back on the food. Also I wouldn't feed your dog puppy food.

That is what I told my husband, he is just feeding them too much. But since they ar skinny in the waist he thinks they need more food.

Yea my boy does look slim at the waist, but I know it's better. I've not been measuring anything, but give him about handful of food per meal. I was feeding him 3 times a day. I didn't know too much food could cause this. I'm going to go light on this food. thanks for all the advice.

At our practice a puppy should have 2 negative stool samples before calling them parasite free. You can get false negatives. Parasites and their eggs are not always shed into the fecal matter depending on the current lifecycle at the time of the sample.

Agree with having more then one stool sample done, I did it every two weeks for a couple of months for Moe, when he had coccidia. And the pigs ears, as much as my boys love them will give them the runs.
