English mastiff puppy

Hello,

I have some concerns about my new puppy and I'm hoping I can get some feedback here. I picked up Sully last week at just over 10 weeks old and he was only 17lbs. I weighed him again last night and he has not gained any weight over the week. That seems quite small to me for his breed. As far as food goes I have him on "Go Natural Salmon Formula". It is 22% protien and 12% fat. Here are the ingredients:

Salmon meal, salmon, oatmeal, whole oats, canola oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a source of vitamin E), oat fibre, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, dried kelp, vitamins (vitamin A supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin E supplement, niacin, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (a source of vitamin C), inositol, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, beta carotene, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), minerals(zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, iron proteinate, zinc oxide, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), chicory extract, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium thermophilum, dried Aspergillus niger fermentation extract, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, yucca schidigera extract, dried rosemary.

It recommends 1.5 cups per day for puppies at his weight. Doesn't seem like much does it? He doesn't seem underweight looking at him and he is full of energy. Any thoughts? Should I consider switching foods?

Its only been a week and he is still trying to adjust to his new life. It is normal for new babies to not gain or even lose some weight during the first week or 2.

The food mentioned IMO isnt very "wholesome" I prefer Taste of the Wild or Blue Buffalo

Smain,

I would be a bit concerned with a EM pup at 10 weeks and only 17 pounds espically a male. I just had a litter that will be 11 weeks and I know for a fact that every puppy born was over 30lbs at 10 weeks with the exception of one small female and she was 26. I first would make sure he is free of parasites fecal test by vet would confirm and shouldn't be to costly. If he doesn't gain any weight over the next week I would definately be having a vet check him out.

I would make sure he's eating and maybe up his food quite a lil bit. If he's eating real well and is still losing weight, you might wanna take him toi the vet. My EM, Maximus, was about 30 lbs at 10 weeks, so he should be putting on some weight. I'd really watch that.

This happened with my male rott and it turned out to be worms. I agree with Ryan, talk to your vet and have them analyze a stool sample. Sounds like he may have worms. Your avatar is great though! Hopefully, he bounces back quickly.

I agree with the checking of parasites... I guess I assumed that he had already been wormed. Even if he has he can still have them. Zuko was infested with round worms. It took a couple treatments to get rid of them.

I agree with Mongo Brutus the puppy I kept out of the litter I just had was wormed at 2,4,6 weeks and was parasite free. Begining this week I noticed his belly was disended and looked full of worms I hit him with wormer again and the next day out came worms in his stool. I am not sure how he got reinfected but he did so its quite possible even though they have been wormed to get worms again.

Hi,
Congrats on your new baby! You will want to remember that different Mastiff lines do mature at faster and slower rates. What I have found to be a normal amount at this age is to be eating about 4 cups a day in three to four meals. Is he hungry and wanting more? You do not want a puppy too heavy while they are growing, but, also not so lean as to see their ribs. I would definitely go with the suggestions to do a fecal and check for any parasites. They are usually gaining around 4 lbs a week at that age, but, when transitioning to a new home it is not uncommon for them to lose a little weight the first few days while they adjust to everything.

One more thing... is he thin? Does he LOOK underweight? Or is he nicely proportioned? If so then he is probably just growing at a slower rate. Was he the smallest in the litter?(or one of the smallest?)

Thanks everyone for the replies:) After seeing the vet today, the vet felt he was a little under weight as well, so we are increasing his dog food and we had a deworming treatment. So, hopefully we will see some improvement right away:) Love my little guy:)

Question for you all...I am still not quite sure on his name. I love the name Sully, but I find myself calling him Sass quite a bit. He just has such a spunky little nature...what do you guys think of the name Sass?

I think Sully is a really cute name! But if you Sass feels right, then keep it.

My kiddos name is Zuko but I call him Little Man ALL the time. I know quite a few people that give there dogs nicknames(even multiple).
