Dog Names

Hey everybody!

How did you come up with your dog's name? How long did it take you?

When I first got Kapone, I named him Nikos. I have no idea why, I just thought it was a nice name. Then my boyfriends cousin got one of "Nikos" brothers and named him Kato. This same cousin had two female dogs named Jada and Gina. So when he named his dog Kato, we wanted to change our dogs name to go with the flow..so we came up with Capone and changed the "C" to a "K" because mommy's name is Kandie :) Also, I once had a dog named Gotti and Kapone fits nicely into the "gangster" theme:lolbangtable:

As for the CC pup I am soon to get, I have no idea what I will name him/her. I want something italian (lol, of course) or maybe the name of a God/Goddess. Or maybe Tiny because it won't be tiny at all. Lol.

Murphy(pitmix)- came with his name, I call him mur mur sometimes, werid I know lol
Plato(lab mix)- came with his name, I usually just call him play which gets funny looks from people sometimes
Moose(DDB)-thought with his size and color that it was a perfect match
Mopar and Hemi(both EM) my mom and I drive challengers so we went with a theme for those two
Concrete(crete)(DDB)- my dad came up with that one, he worked as a contractor
zeus(EM)-came with that name, seems to be very popular
Rigger(EM)- we do a lot of deep sea fishing, so down riggers and rigged up, thats how we came up with that one

Apollo (Rottie) - Named after gods in that litter
Cyrus (Rottie) - Named after gods in that litter (full brother to Apollo)
Athena (Rottie) - Tried to keep with the god/goddess theme of the house
U2 aka Hemi (Corso) - Litter theme was bands names and Hemi for call name to drive the bf insane as he is a ford man but is always taking my stuff so figured if I named it after a Dodge product he would leave her alone :)

???? (corso puppy(s)) - haven't decided yet what we are thinking for this litter.

My first dog was Pi (as in the mathematical equation), the reason being I heard an interview with a hardcore preacher from the states and he wanted Math taken out of the school curriculum as it taught kids there were no absolutes. I was young and so she became Pi, also as a merle Aussie Shepherd she had a perfect circle on her bum.
Then my fosters
Kimik- Wolf Husky cross
Rosie- Jack Russel (came named)
Junior- Mastiff (came to me the day JFK jr died)

Then we got
Joe Boxer (self explanitory)
Dolce our first CC (means sweet in Italian) I like having softer names for the breed.
Aurora (came named, A litter; Aurora, Apple, Achoo, Ariel and Alishna)
Charybdis aka Cribs (C litter) came named and I love her name. Is fitting.

Hey Moose, you hve a lot of dogs! Are some of those beasties rescues?
Murphy we got from the shelter, plato was apart of the seeing eye puppy program, and zeus we got as a rescue. The only dog that we dont have right now out of that list is mopar he passed away around a year ago right before he turned 2. Then we got zeus, and rig was not to long after.

When I lived in Hawaii I had two pit bulls and named them Hawaiian names:
Nani (means pretty)
Kui (the word for the sound of thunder, aka "boom")

Then I got my pit mix back here in California, and kept up with the Hawaiian names:
Noe Lani means heavenly mist, we just call her Noe which means misty

With the Corso, we looked through a long list of Italian dog names and stumbled on Dino, which carries the double meaning of being both an Italian name and the dinosaur dog on the Flinstones :)

Nothing exciting for Ebony ... she just came that way. We thought it didn't fit her because although she's dark, she's not black. I wanted to rename her Mocha (I live on 'em), but when she got here she already answered to "Ebony" so we just left it.

Downside? Every single person over 40 who gets introduced to her starts humming/singing "Ebony and Ivory". It was cute the first time, annoying after five, and now it causes homicidal thoughts.

I've always chosen names that just come to me but I also tend to pull from literature

Zodian (Zody for short and he came to both) Staffie Lab cross
Petey (his registered name is Apoko Pete and my son came up with it when he was 2) Lab
Indy (Registered name was Echoes of Indira, which is the Goddess of Thunder and Sky so her name meant Echoes of thunder, actually put thought into that one, lol) Lab
Snitter (from the Plague Dogs, which is my favorite book) Shepherd cross
Lobo (just came to me and I think it is odd since it is the name of my cat)

and that is it. The bearded dragon is named after a pokemon, the other cat the kids named from a book and the frogs are named from Ren and Stimpy. ;o)

Kelso was named after That 70's Show. Because he was big and goofy like Michael Kelso.
LOL. I thought so

I totally understand that. When people hear my first name is Kandie, they start singing one of two songs "Candy Girl" or "It tastes just like candy" Not amusing after hearing it 10 million times. Lol

When you both say it was because the litter, what do you mean? You weren't allowed to change the name? The CC pup I will be getting will have a themed name, along with it's siblings, but I'm allowed to change it.

Some breeders designate a letter to represent that litter. If it is the first litter they might use "A" so all the puppies in that litter's name usually start with an A and include the kennel name. It doesn't mean that is what you have to call them at home is more about their registered name.

U2 de Italica Terrae goes by Hemi (themed litter of bands but couldn't see me calling everyone in and saying you too, U2 ;) )
Danae goes by her registered name

We haven't decided what we are going to do with our litter but if it is themed then we don't request that the puppy be called by its registered name, they are more than welcome to call the puppy at home whatever they want but in show catelogues, peidgrees, etc. the name that is shown will be the registered one.

Both my breeders have said I could change the call, how ever I like the registered names as call names.
We have shortened Aurora to Raw, and Charybdis to Cribs.
But on paper it is Aurora del' Agreste and Antiquity's Charybdis
Both breeders have been old school and go by the traditional A,B,C litters. However I believe Lisa started with B over A with her first litter, lol, had to many B names she liked.
