Did I get a dud?

I think I have a dud here. I have a 14 month old boerboel that has only gained about 10 lbs in the last 5 months (he's about 117 lbs and had actually list a couple lbs) The vet said he's as tall as he's gonna get which is only 23 inches. Should I expect another growth spurt? When I got the dog from the breeder, she said the dog should get as big as his father which is 160 lbs at 3 years old and he could easily eat off the kitchen counter. Most of the dogs I've come across on chat forums are much bigger than he is at his age. He does have a very good temperament however and gets along quite well with people and other dogs! Any thoughts?

He'll have another growth spurt, maybe 1 or maybe more. Enjoy his good temperament and don't worry about his size as it is genetically determined.

If he has a good temperament and gets along well with people and other dogs, then I'd say no, you didn't get a "dud", no matter what his final height and weight are.

I agree with Hiraeth. My EM girls are significantly smaller than the EM's I hear about on the forum, but they are so loving and good natured that I'll take my mini-mastiff's over any other dog. I just love them no matter how big they get.

Denna's also smaller than both her parents (160 versus 185 & 200)... I (and many of our friends) thinks she's PLENTY big, as is - especially when she wants to be a lap dog (which is daily). I aim more for health and body condition, and let size (height/weight) do it's own thing.

I agree with everyone on the board. And in my experience the height/weight sneaks up on you. I sometimes don't realize how much my girls have grown until I look at older pictures and their growth charts. They have really grown up. I no longer have to bend down to pat Sage on the head...I did a few weeks ago.

My boy is three years old and he is still filling out and all the while, the vet kept saying "That's about as big as he's gonna get." Even if he turned out to be 10 lbs, he would never be a "dud." (Sorry, but the word "dud" in reference to animal hurts.)

Honestly, my Tripp may not get to the 140 we were told but he is plenty of energy, friendlyness and playfulness a owner could want. And he loves to give kisses!! They are aweso.e coming from a mastiff and he is only 7 months old. ;)

Our beautiful Tali Lou is small by DDB breed standards at just under 100lbs, but that is plenty big enough when she's cuddling on me, stepping on my feet, walking on a leash... She is our teacup Dogue de Bordeaux.

Hahahaha...I call Bella my mini-mastiff because she is shorter than Sage and other EM's and significantly less pound wise.

One thing I've learned from this Forum is giant breeds grow at their own rate. Angus's growth stalled between 11 and 15 months at right about 140 lbs. Then all of a sudden it started again where we see a noticeable difference weekly in some portion of his body. Now at 19 months he's at close to 160 lbs. Based on the average of his parents weight we figure he'll be around 180 lbs. when done around age 3. But who knows just like humans there isn't a sure way to predict.
