Daisy -19 weeks tomorrow. Our Boerboel Beauty has learned “soft mouth” with her razor sharp puppy teeth. Finally. No Canines yet so the hard part is over. Daisy is long and lanky with her head growing bigger than her body. Almost like a lion. It will be fun watching her body mature into her head and puppy feet. She is pressing almost 70Lbs. Vet visit next week to confirm. Her stubbornness and laziness is confirming this Mastiff trait. We’ve allowed her to be a full puppy- trust, love, basic manners BUT our training begins. Any suggestions on off leash heel, answering door manners, etc? The stubbornness is not something we’ve delt with in our Dobermans or Black Mouth Curs. Daisy wants to do what Daisy wants to do at times. Thanks !

Off leash heelmis something I start with a long line or no leash at all. I'm not home where I have access to my videos and articles this weekend, but this is pretty much what I do.

As with anything, it's always easier to teach the relatively few things you DO want than it is to unteach the things you don't. Most everything you don't want her doing can be prevented by teaching a default incompatible behavior. Just as an example, you can teach a doorbell or knock to mean she should immediately gomto her place until released. A default sit upon greetings or any attention will prevent jumping. She can't jump if her butt is on the ground. I work very hard to try to tell my pups what I want them to do instead of always telling them what not to do. So instead of "Roy! No jumping." I'd say "Roy, sit." Or "Roy, place." Or, in time, the doorbell or a person wanting to greet them means a default sit, etc. It's really easier to create good behaviors from the start than to try to break bad habits. Everything you want right now can be taught positively. And remember - dogs do what works. Keep that in mind always.
