Cropping ears

Can I ask why the ears of some of the CC get cropped or cut? Sorry, not sure of the proper term. Is it to make them look tough, a breed standard requirement?

I have found with owing big dogs, most people are already scared enough and with the cropped ears they look pretty tough and with their ears untouched they look a bit softer.

I know some breeds such as the Doberman have work on their ears as well and I have also been curious as to why.

Please don't offence as none is intended, just thought I would ask the question

I think the simple answer is that people like the way it looks. I believe it was first done way back when to prevent wolves from getting a hold of their ears while the dogs where hunting or protecting property. Now it is done for the distiguished look it gives them.
