Craigslist and adoptions

We got Cache off Craigslist. She wasn't in the pet section though, she was in the barter section and the ad said, "Will trade pit bull for anything you have laying around your house." 4 bald tires that didn't fit any of our vehicles was all it took. They said they could not control her and as such, crated her 16 hours a day. They were feeding her kibbles 'n bits (which she was allergic to) and she was missing lots of fur and covered in open sores from the allergic reactions. They said the sores were from mange and their options were supposedly a $4,000 treatment or to euthanize her. So, they were treating the "mange" with no-name ACV on her kibbles 'n bits.

So, yeah, I'd take a dog off Craigslist if I felt it was the right thing to do.

My respect, QY10. Not one doubt you saved Cache from a horrible life and death.

She has some quirks, but we can't help but love the old girl. She's been with us about 3 years now. ☺*

I think the amount of luck you have on Craigslist can swing in either the good direction or bad, depending on the geographical area you are in and the type of people who you may be ultimately dealing with. I have had phenominally great luck with getting rescue dogs out of bad situations on craigslist with near zero complications or bad experiences. Usually you can tell what kind of person the seller is, just by a brief phone call. If something sounds fishy, or crazy, just pass that one by. I know you cant save them all, but it sure makes a world of difference for the one(s) you can save!

We got Leia off Craigslist. We did pay a significant "rehoming" fee for her. But, after seeing her pics and meeting her there was no way we were leaving her. She was being somewhat cared for, however she was being kept outside. They told us she was full blooded EM - 16 wks, that they owned the mom and dad and Leia was the last of 11 pups. However they were unwilling to let us meet the parents, unwilling to even show is her home and after taking her to the vet the next day, we were told she was at least 6 mos old. She was infested with fleas, had several ticks and just smelled awful. We bathed her 2 times the first night we had her - before taking her to the vet. She had a type of mange causing her hair to fall out on her chest. I agree with Molossers R Us, I realize we can't save them all - but Leia is the sweetest dog, we are so thankful she is a part of our family.

Supposedly this is Leia - but I also found this same pic online after a general mastiff images search.

This is our sweet girl now. We are excited to watch her grow. When we brought her home - she was 58 lbs on 6/30 last week she weighed in at 81 lbs.
I don't know that we will go this route in the future as we have a lot of unanswered questions - but currently Leia is a healthy happy pup at about 8 mos old and we are thrilled she is in our home!

I found my BM on Craigslist, the day after he was listed. I went to see him and spent time talking to the owners to get a feel for them. They were a military family that had a new baby and wanted to re-home one of their two large dogs. No charge for him, just love. When I got home, they had emailed me some of his baby pictures. I still send them pictures every Christmas so they know he is being loved and well cared for. Not everyone on CL is bad.

I would and have. I personally dont consider anything under 250 or so as a high fee. I do consider that a fair adoption fee. I actually used to work in social research (state paid) and studies have proven that charging $100 or more (adjust for inflation and your location) does have benefit for the adopted pet. Unless I personally knew someone I would never give away even a stray cat for free or cheap. It goes beyond abusive jerks. You also have to worry about medical researchers looking for test subjects.

And further I have run into accidental breedings in which they are both trying to find a good home and also recoup the substantial cost of the mistake...

Now if you see a cl ad for thousands of dollars I would suspect backyard breeder but you can always do your research if you think it is legit.

Craig's List is not really a thing over here but we do have dedicated pet selling sites and Facebook pages etc etc.
I got Max from a selling site whilst I was just browsing out of curiosity with no intention of actually getting a dog.
The owner (scum bag bitch that she was) was asking £50 for him but gave me 30 back to buy him bowls and toys as he had nothing at her house.
Now whilst I personally disagree with making any money on a rehomed pup I understand that with unwanted litters there is a cost involved that the owner may try to recoup.
And with adult dogs a rehoming fee may dissuade fighters from picking the dog up to be used as bait.

The last dog I enquired about was on Facebook. She came with a £100 rehoming fee but I was told I could pay that directly to the rescue of my choice as long as I showed proof that I had done so.

I thought that was a brilliant idea.
