Third rabies case of 2010 confirmed in New Hanover County

A third rabid animal has been found this year in New Hanover County, officials reported Wednesday.

State lab results returned Tuesday confirmed that a raccoon found fighting with a pet dog earlier this week had the contagious virus, animal control authorities said.

The dog came in contact with the raccoon at a residence on Middle Sound Loop Road on Sunday.

The dog was current on its rabies vaccine, so it did not need to be quarantined or put down. It did receive a booster shot after the incident.
