Cinder is sick....

Cinder is 16 weeks tomorrow (Oct 31st birthday) ... she had her last round of distemper/parvo/lepto shots today... she also had her rabies shot and instead of the liquid dewormer, she had a interceptor plus yellow 26-50lb wormer pill...
She ate breakfast just fine (chopped whole chicken - 12oz) after we got home about 8:30...
She had lunch of the same about 1:30
My kids had a snack of doritos about 4 and cinder was fed (without me knowing) an unknown amount...
Around 5 cinder puked a a fist sized pile of chicken covered in bright orange dorito chunks...
About 6 she seemed to be just fine (and since the doritos incident seemed to be the culprit) she was fed another 12 oz of chopped chicken....
We left at 6:45 to meet some friends and cinder was put in her kennel...
We returned about 9:45, kids went to bed, cinder was let out, went potty, acted fine... craig went to bed, and I was still up, cinder was being her usual self trying to get right next to me on the couch...
About 10:15 cinder gets off the couch and goes and lays down in her kennel (not unusual as that is about the time she goes in every night... I hear the deep noises of her about to puke... she goes outside on the deck and sits there...
I investigate her kennel and she had thrown up some yellow slime .... I start pulling her sheets out and discover during the time we were gone she puked 2 more fist sized piles of chicken (no doritos on any of it) ...
She is acting normal for thia time of night.. which is lazy and seems like she just wants to go to bed, and other than the mostly dry heaving she is acting normal.... she doesn't have a bloated tummy.... she has peed and pooped reg all day... no signs of grass in the puke...
No change of diet....
Do you think it's still the doritos getting out of her system (that may seem silly but she gets no table food) ... or do you think one of her shots or the new heartworm pill has not agreed with her?

My puppy has diarrhea after shots/deworming, so it's possible it was one of those. She could also have eaten something she wasn't supposed to, as we all know that puppies are very good at finding things we lost ten years ago. If she is acting normal in the morning i would hold the food for a few of hours and give her only a few gulps of water at a time. If she is still throwing up and acts off, i would go to the vet for sure. Also, I always keep Cerenia, Debridat and Smecta (last two are for humans, don't know if they are available there) in the house for times like these.

Don't feed her for a day. Let her system clear up. I do this with a Solo once a month just to clean him out. I also do it myself. Solo had a puking/pooping incident last month. Ate something off the floor when my gf was cooking. Didn't feed him the next day. Got it out of his system. Problem solved.

I would say it is from the vax or the Interceptor. I would call the vet and let them know so that it goes on her record. More than likely they will just tell you to keep an eye on her. It's fairly common for dogs not to feel will after getting their shots. Just make sure she stays hydrated. You can fast her but I'm a little leery of that with such young dogs.

Well we skipped breakfast because she had few dry heaves before going outside .... I kept vigil over her all night with me sleeping on the couch... she seemed to quiet down about midnight....
She had a pretty quiet morning... and was much perkier around lunch time... so I fed her 6 oz of her chicken... hardly any bones... that was about 90 mins ago... I will keep an eye on her today...
I did see that vomiting was one of the side effects of the interceptor... so im thinking with the extra heavy cocktail of meds she got yesterday, it's just upset her stomach...
Since its almost 60 today in iowa in February. ... we will be spending some much needed time outside!!! So I will let her get some good old fashioned fresh air too!!!
Not gonna lie, I was a little freaked out last night... with a few recent stories on here about sick dogs... in almost 13 yrs I have NEVER had to take any of my 4 kids to the er (hubby did twice!! LOL) but not me... and I was little freaked that my first visit was gonna be with the 4 legged kid!! My cooler side prevailed and I had a bad nights sleep while watching over the new fur baby... :)

Poor pup. That was a lot of meds at once, I can see where that could cause an upset tummy.

I'd do like you did - half-sized meals, and if those come back up, drop down to just some beef broth (I have cubes of home-made broth that I would use)... if those stay down, try another small meal, or maybe just a few bites at a time. Hopefully she's all better within 24-36 hours... if not, I'd be talking with the vet, to see if there's something they could recommend - and get it on her record not to repeat that mix of meds again.

She did ok yesterday.... as I said we skipped breakfast, she got half of her lunch and normal supper.... she tried to get rambunctious with the kids but this momma was keeping her low key...
This morning she got beef heart for breakfast... no bones. ... at lunch chicken wasn't thawed yet (all the hoopla I forgot) so she got half lunch of beef heart (what was left over...) and for supper she got a couple of chicken legs and a thigh... about a couple of hrs after supper she chucked up the thigh...
Nothing else has come up and she has been drinking tons of water.... I will call the vet in the morning and see what they say... I think her tummy is still a bit upset with the bones... :-(

At least she is keeping herC food down. It usually takes a couple of days to get back on track. Big hugs for Cinder!

There has been lots going on this weekend... and tonight she was really hitting at the door... I let her out 3 times in about 10 mins and she just stood on the deck... so when she was at the door for the fourth time I told her no... and thats when she chucked up the thigh... I couldnt be mad because she tried to tell me, but she just hadn't chucked up yet... lol... poor thing...
I let her out a little bit ago and I was checking out her kennel to see if she had do anything in there while things were hectic tonight and I discover the little turkey had stashed one of her chicken legs in there!!! That's a first!!! She didn't eat all her supper!!! So I know she isn't feeling good...
Again I will give the vet a call in the morning and see what they think... shes just like one of the kids and I hate she feels bad and she can't tell me what's wrong...

Well.... Cinder didn't chuck up anything else beside the thigh last night... but she would even touch her breakfast this morning... and thats got me super worried because this dog scarfs down whatever we put in front of her!!! But not this morning... not even a small bit of the beef heart....
Called the vet and they don't seem to think it's the meds at this point... so will be taking her in at 10:30 ...
She doesn't chew or eat anything out of the ordinary... besides all the chaos in this house, I've been very good about keeping things out of her reach... that doesn't mean I didnt miss something though... she acts fine other than the fact she vomited and now doesn't want to eat...
I will update later when I have more news....
P.s..... I took everyone's advice and purchased ins through healthy paws on Feb 1.... got the email on the 16th (last tuesday) saying she was past the waiting period .... hope we don't have to use it right away!!! But sure am glad we got it when we did!!!

Vet checked her over pretty good... gave her an amoxi/dex shot to help her feel better... told me to give it 24 and if she doesn't get better to bring her in and they would do some xrays... hes worried about a foreign object. .. and is also concerned she lost 2 lbs over the last 3 days...
I know I'm not perfect (no one is) but I have tried so hard to be a good mommy to cinder... im just so worried about her right now... please pray or send good vibes she just still has an upset tummy and she doesn't have something stuck!!!

Easy for me to stay calm :) At this point, there really is nothing to worry about. Pups get tummy aches all the time. Just like with kids, you know what to look for. Every time I take one of mine in for vomiting or diarrhea, the first thing that is mentioned is a blockage. So, don't let that scare you. Do keep an eye on her poop. I would keep a poop journal. Noting when she goes and the type of poop. Is it soft or the first half is hard, the rest is soft. Is there mucous. It can tell the vet where the irritation/ upset is. Funny I can stay rationale when it is someone else's dog but if it was Justice I would be on here freaking out. LOL You are an excellent fur mommy. Cinder is just being a typical puppy.

You are a FANTASTIC for Cinder. Puppies and even adult dogs do this from time to time. They eat or drink something they shouldn't that we don't see - no matter how vigilant we think we are. Take a deep breath and follow your vet's advice. Sending good thoughts your way!

I'm sure everything will be ok. Puppy are really dumb creatures and always eat stuff they shouldn't, so an upset stomach now and then is usually nothing serious. My Thor is just a couple weeks older than yours and sometime i feel that he will drive me to an early grave with all the crap he gets into. Anyway, everyone who spends time on this forum knows what a good mommy you are.

Thanks guys... I know puppies get into stuff, no matter what we do... she is just like one of the kids and I feel so bad she is sick!!!
I gave her 4 oz of lunch... mostly beef heart and there was a small piece of leg in there for bone... she at least ate that little bit ... so we shall see if she keeps it down...
She has been drinking tons of water, so I'm not worried about dehydration...
Its just a bit strange... she acts like nothing is wrong... she was rolling around on the floor "wrestling" with her stuffed hedgehog (no rips or tears... I checked each toy over ) and the vet even mentioned when I came in she didn't act sick... she didn't have a temp (she tolerated that whole procedure very well...lol) and she wasn't too hard to hold while he "probed" for a blockage at her exit (i told craig at least he used lube...LOL)
I know she will be fine, whatever it is...

She will be fine because you are a fantastic mommy and are staying on top of everything.

Emma did have a blockage. Acted like a fool and had her normal puppy enthusiasms in the er and they sent her home. Went to her normal vet the next Monday and he did X-ray but it wasn't clear so he sent it to radiologist to read and she was scheduled for surgery. This was over about four days.

Their behavior can be misleading but you will know something is wrong. Be persistent. She will be fine.

You really are on top of it. I'm like you...when Bella was sick I just called the second they opened and took her in. I am not playing around with these puppies. She did have a fever and was lethargic the entire time, but willing to let them take x-rays and poke/prod her. She is much better now. Cinder will get better, just keep doing what you're doing.

She kept her 4 oz of lunch down... and I decided to give her 8 oz for supper... we hand fed her a couple of pieces of beef heart but that's all she would eat...
She has acted normal all day and over the past few days... but after her turning down most of her dinner, she has just gone to her kennel to sleep...
She hasn't vomited at all... but I will be spending another night of vigil over her on the couch and I will call the vet in the morning and go ahead with the xrays...
I just feel that if it was truly just an upset stomach she would be at least trying to eat... and I also think it will give me piece of mind ... I will let you all know if anything changes and how the xrays go....
