To be honest with you YES you can use a choker on a 5 month old CC as long as used properly and fitted correctly

I wont us one again. I was stupid and left a dog unattended with one on. I lost her because she got caught on a tree with it.

I have always used one for walking purposes only. I've always been afraid to leave one but when used properly they are great.

I use a choke collar for Boone only when I take him out for a walk. He's still learning to heel, and there are too many distractions for him otherwise. He doesn't pull on it (yay!) but I make sure I take it off when at home :)

The way it was explained to me was why go right from option a) to option c) or d) with a young puppy? If you go from flat collar to choke/prong what option do you have after that? We haven't even put a martingale on our shepherd puppy yet. We're still trying the flat collar although well probably move to martingale soon.

I think it depends on the dog but everyone is right in that you need to know how to fit/use it properly. It was my goal to be able to stay at a flat collar and I have trained accordingly and until Ruger turned into Houdini, I did. He now wears a martingale when we are out and about. He walks wonderfully and I don't need it for pulling or anything but he liked the idea of standing still and then yanking his head out of the collar. Amazingly enough, he didn't go anywhere.......I think he just liked proving he could. After that when he felt like he wanted to be free, he would just houdini himself out. A martingale works well with him because he just needed to know that he couldn't pull out and he is fine now. LOL Just depends on the dog and the bahavior.

Prong Collar! Learn to use it properly! It was easy to train my Corso to heel on a prong and they don't collapse like a choke collar does. One of the best purchases I've ever made and she loves it!
