Chicken Necks

What is the general consensus with feeding chicken necks to larger dogs? I picked some up today for a good price but have read theyre better for smaller dogs and that large dogs will just gulp them whole. Would chicken frames be better for a 7 month old Mastiff pup?

What great looking pups!

There are differing opinions but I do feed chicken necks personally. They are usually frozen which makes them have to chew.

IMO it depends on your pups eating style...do they eat rapidly or slowly? If they eat rapidly I wouldn't risk it but if they eat slowly, chew well and you are watching them closely during feeding time you might be alright. Personally we don't feed necks - too much bone and Angus eats/inhales his food far to fast. Whole birds are a better bet for us.

I agree- it mostly depends on your dog's eating style. I will buy them on occasion, because Mateo is a slow eater and doesn't gulp, but still....they are very small. Duck or turkey necks are a better size...

Yep - know thy dog.

If you think they'll be too small to give to your pup (i.e. gulping/choking hazard) you could freeze some together, and feed them frozen as a bigger chunk that would require more chomping.

When I do chicken, I get whole chickens and just whack them into about 4 pieces. I know people like to get the cheap-cheap cuts (necks or 'frames'), but Denna can't do that much bone without meat attached (she gets constipated)... so I'd be feeding a lot of boneless meat with those bits, which is counter-productive for the price. Whole chickens is the best value for how I feed Denna.

Denna has had turkey necks before - the ones we had were a good size.
