Cherry eye

So Greta got cherry eye within the first month of me getting her, it was in her left eye and no matter what i did nothing made it pop back in so in she went for surgery and had it removed. No ill effects whatsover, as if it never happened at all. When it happened i noted that it was when i had her on just a collar with leash versus a harness and i had read that when they pull it causes pressure and can pop out the gland. Afterwards I immediately got a harness for her and all has been well. Recently as she has gotten bigger and bigger her behavior on walks and such is usually very good but she does a hand tendency to pull when something excites her so i stopped using the harness and went back to a straight leather collar and leash (she minds so much better with it vs a harness) buuuut without fail i noticed immediately her right eye started having the tell tale signs of an impending cherry eye. I switched right back to the harness and so far so good, everything went back to normal but i fear this is only temporary. I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this and anything they did to avoid it recurring if possible? When i saw it not only did i switch back to the harness i gave her a few eye drops and that seemed to help quite a bit but again, i fear temporary. If it happens it happens, not the biggest deal in the world but its still a pain that i'd like to avoid if i can. So, what ya'll think?

Her eye is looking good so congrats. Sometimes it happens and while the harness might help for now I think at some point it is going to pop and not go back down and will need to be removed. It is one of the hazards of the breed :( But it is pretty common and not a huge issue to correct when it does happen.

Thanks, I'm very pleased with the results. Some people (including a couple vets) wanted to tack it back in but everyone I talked to that's had that procedure said it didn't last long at all and ended up in the same situation. After a LOT of different quotes I finally found a vet that wasn't trying to take me to the cleaners price-wise. Couldn't be happier with them. I'm expecting it to pop out again and for good, i almost think i want it to happen now before I move and have to find yet another reasonable vet.

Yes it is getting harder to find a vet that will do a removal instead of a tack but have seen better results with the tack.

Really? All i hear is the opposite from people i've spoken with who got the tack, said it was waste of time and money and the removal always had to be done later on b/c it just popped right back out. I might start calling vets in michigan now to figure see what i might expect.

From the couple of people that have used a tack (there aren't many) there seems to be one vet that does it well and they all seem to go to him (up here at least in our area) and it does turn out well. If they get it removed I have heard that it takes care of the problem from the start and then you don't worry about it again. But there are some that claim removing the gland can cause some dry eye. Neither (thank goodness) are ones I have had to deal with on my corsi as of yet.

I initially heard about the dry eye thing and was going to go with the tacking but when i talked to my vet she told that can be a problem in some breeds but in her experience Corso's dont seem to suffer from it like others. On top of that I give Greta an eye drop every so often just to keep things lubricated :)

I guess i need to start finding some recommendations, i'm willing to do the tack if it actually takes. I hate to remove something if not necessary.

Our CC had her cherry eyes tacked twice & the 3rd go round completely removed....

Before having her femur surgery, March 2010

Looks great! This is exactly why I won't even bother with tacking....its just not a permanent solution and odds are it'll just come right back and cost you even more money. If it caused any problems i would think differently but I have yet to see a single ill effect to having Greta's left glad removed. She's perfectly happy and her eye looks fantastic. The gland popped back in overnight while she was sleeping but i know that won't last. I'll be making the appointment for next week most likely once i have a bit more time.

She was our first CC & first time ever dealing with cherry eyes....she was a foster I had via the rescue I ran (adopted her after we got super attached to her & she to us).....our vet didnt want to just remove them & therefore tried tacking them twice before finally removing them, hind sight should have just had them out the first time & saved her all that. In the future if I ever had a dog w/ cherry eye I'll insist the tacking is skipped & just have them removed.

I agree, Cecily had hers removed over 2 yrs ago & she's never had a single issue w/ her eyes :)

I agree she looks great such a transformation. That experience though makes me wonder if tacking even works more than half fof the cases I hear from tacking usually it comes back. To me it would make much more sense to remove it and elliminate the possibilty of return. IMO.

I think you are right... as long as it isn't a breed with serious potential for dry eye then I think removal is the best way to go.

Thank yall!! She's a great girl & went through a lot of surgeries the first few months we had her.

I agree, hind sight would have had them removed from the get go - & any future CC's we have will have them removed first go round if they have cherry eye. :D
