Charlie Gaining One Pound A Week

Hello Folks,

Our boy Charlie (a Boerboel/Bullmastif cross) has been gaining approximately one pound a week.

At 13 weeks old, he weighs 33 pounds.

He is on Acana Large Breed Puppy food, and wolfs down 3 cups of food a day, divided into 3 meals (morning, mid day, and early evening). On top of that, he gets small amounts of chicken, cottage cheese, yougurt, sardines, cooked mixed veggies, cooked egg, chopped fresh greens, apple, bits of raw carrot, raw beef bones, and anything else he can wrap his huge mouth around (including nyla bones, toys, cardboard boxes, empty plastic milk jugs, sticks, any garden plants that are still around, grass, leaves, bird seeds, feathers, bunny poops.... Well you get the picture, lol.

My little hoover baby appears to be starving.
He's not thin, he's not fat, he looks good, but he seems like he's super hungry all the time.

My question is, are three cups of food a day plus the toppers mentioned above enough for a growing Mastiff boy, who is gaining one pound a week???

Here are a few pictures, to give you all an idea of the shape he's in.

I'd feed him one cup less and divided in 2 meals/day. And as much walks and plays at he can take at this age, puppies get tired faster.

He is a bit chubby, but not too much, nothing to worry about... it can be fixed easily.

Our cinder is 1 now.... she is full blooded old English mastiff... and at this time she eats 2.5 cups of kibble 3 times a day (topped with a raw egg each meal for her itchies)
She isn't chubby, she isn't skinny... she is 116# at her one yr weigh in 3 weeks ago...
We brought her home at 7 weeks and she weighed 11 lbs...
She has always and continues to hoover everything!!!
We started out with a raw diet and she hoovered... my source of cheap protein dried up and financially we had to switch her to kibble... approx 9-10 months of age...
We feed her a local tractor supply store brand called 4health...
On the raw diet she had a reg gain of about 10 pounds a month and with the kibble we have struggled to get the right amount and she has had a Flux from 5-7 pounds up to this point...
She still hoovers everything!!! I, personally, think some dogs are just born hoovers!!!

Notice her lady-like posture on the couch... she does NOT have that same composure when eating .... LOL

I might need new glasses but there's no way that pup is chubby, especially since he is 13 weeks old. As a matter of fact, I think he looks perfect.

I think a pound a week is a good growth rate and his body condition looks good, so he's probably getting all the food he needs. When the situation changes and he gets too skinny, you can add more. Mine also acted like he was starving all the time, at that age. He would have eaten himself stupid, if I allowed him to. He is, to this day, banished from being unsupervised in the kitchen.

Thanks for the response.
I'm glad to hear that Charlie (aka Chuckle Bum) appears to be in good shape. I know that slimmer is better, but don't want too skinny as to impede proper growth either.

As long as 1 pound a week is the proper gain for his age group, then I'm satisfied.

How old is your boy, and what is he?

Thanks for the information about Cinder, and the sweet pictures. Cinder is a big beautiful girl. Absolutely love the lady like posture,20161016_075553.jpg our Charlie could take lessons in modesty (as you will see in the next picture, lol)

I'm happy to hear that our Charlie is not the only hoover around. I am amazed at all the stuff that goes in, and all the poop that comes out .

Have a wonderful day,

~Elana~

I was actually concerned that he might be a bit too thin (ribs showing).
I would like him to grow slow and steady, and gain appropriate weight for his breed combination and age group.

Best wishes,

~Elana~

Trust me, Chuckle Bum Charlie, is not that small anymore either. He is growing like a bad weed. Now when I pick him up, there is Charlie legs and bum hanging all over the place (and I'm not a tiny person either).

Slimmer is better, but not to the point of being emaciated. To me, your pup's weight looks ideal for a 3 months old mastiff pup. Some mastiff breeds have stockier build and thicker skin than others, so a good weight Great Dane will look very different from a Cane Corso or Neapolitan mastiff.
My pup is a 13 months old Cane Corso. He's crazy, acts like a kid high on sugar most of the time and has scared me to death on numerous occasions with his complete lack of self preservation, but he still manages to make me smile every day, even during the bad ones.
