Changing stool - confusing time!

You sound like a wild one lol. So different then the people I know from India. Lol is Boone your only dog?

Yeah, I am - mum says I should have been born a guy! Lolz!

Boone's my only dog for now, though I've owned and worked with tons of dogs earlier. My first dog was a rescued lab :). My next (in the next couple of months) is still being debated. I want a BM or TM or NM, but there are no good ones available here. So my next choice is a German Mastiff - hubby ain't too keen on that breed. :(

Wow allot has happened since I was last on here. I'm glad to hear that you are going to try out the whole raw thing. Some points to consider regarding the chicken, if you find that your little guy is not chewing the bones you might want to try freezing them and feeding them somewhat frozen this works for me it is important that he chews as whole bones have been known to cause blockages in the intestinal tract. You can also hold the leg in your hand to force slower feeding, I can not do this as I would prob loose my hand in the process.:) be careful you do not feed bones that are too dense any load bearing bones should bavoideded as they can damage his little puppy teeth.

Nope - In a place called Pune, closer to Mumbai :)

I was holding the leg in my hand! With a prong of sorts (to avoid my hand being taken off - precisely! And yes, it was partially frozen (learnt from the afternoon feeding!). That's how he atleast ate it in three pieces rather than one. He didn't chew each part of the bone though. Intestinal blockage? Now that gets me scared!!! Please please tell me chicken drumstick bone in three pieces won't cause it!

As long as he's breaking it down some he's good. And yah, I'd do drums and thighs with hte rice/yogurt/etc for now. The yellow is normal, chicken poop is yellower than "usual".

Okay he just pooped again - same consistency, smaller amount (but the same amount of food).

Honestly, not a bad start. Once he's totally on raw he should be pooping both less times and less amount.

Last night, I thought he had cannon butt, but the poo that came out (starting projectile, ending normal) was the same consistency as before - semi solid, yellow. No other poop so far (since about 11:30 pm last night, it's about 7:45 am now). Good sign?

Also, I have him the leg completely frozen in the morning chow (about 15 minutes ago). I NEEDED him to chew more - he still at it, going pretty slow. Is it okay to give him meat like this?

As he gets used to it he should chew more and you can thaw it more. Just don't do anything bigger frozen.

No poop so far isn't a bad sign as long as he's not acting constipated. If he starts acting constipated, or his poop is whitish and crumbly, reduce the bone. I'm hoping though that it means his system is accepting it ok!

Meaning?

No poop so far isn't a bad sign as long as he's not acting constipated.

He's not looking uncomfortable, if that's what you're saying. Are there any particular signs I should look for?

I'm hoping though that it means his system is accepting it ok!

Me too! I'm going to my friend's place to restock for the week. Should I switch him to meat completely (cut off rice/pumpkin/yogurt)? Should I start on the 80/10/10 thing (Of course, no organ for now). What section of chicken should I get?

To big, frozen, could be hard on his teeth is my concern.

Look for him acting like he wants to go but not. Or assuming 'the position' and then straining to produce. That sorta thing.

I get whatever chicken's on sale! One warning, here in the US, poultry at the grocery stores is often "enhanced" with broth. This adds salt which can screw with the dog's system. I can'timagine thats an issue for you, but I try to warn folks anyway.

If he's still doing well by the end of today I'd switch him completely to chicken!

Meaning, more chicken than what he's getting right now. Cool! :)

He pooped while I was reading your reply Lolz! Harder than yesterday, still yellow, still semi solid.

We don't really have chicken sales here - but if I buy in bulk I can get a discount. Which parts should I concentrate on? Should I pay attention to the 80/10/10 thing or not just now?

Yay!

Any part is fine, and if they include organs go ahead and stock up, but don't feed the organs yet.

Eventually you want him down to no more than 10% bone, but right now feed however much bone it takes to keep his system happy.

Glad he's taking to it!

Edit:eventually you're going to need far more meat than bone, so don't JUST get necks and backs.

Right - went out and got stock for the week! Different packs, labeled in order of feeding - decreasing bone level in each. All packs are a mix of neck, back, leg, thigh and breast. (Phew! About 2 odd hours of work!)

He has pooped twice so far today - the first I wrote about and one just now. This one is a little more brown, and has tiny bone fragments in it. The quantity has reduced as well :D. I've read somewhere that bone fragments in poop is normal.

Does all of this sound about right?

I would watch the amount of chicken legs you give as they are the hardest bones in the chicken and could cause damage to his teeth while he is young although I have heard mixed thoughts on this topic and I sort of believeve that they can handle them quite well I feed chicken legs only a hand full of times while he still had his puppy teeth. Now he is 7 1/2 months and eats them regularly I do continue to feed Pumpkin not all the time however yogurt, sweet potato, Oatmeal and the occasionalal apple banana strawberries blueberries. His diet consist mostly of a beef organ mix I buy pre ground I buy whole tripe and cut it up into chunks I give chicken quarters and I also have a ground chicken bone included with organ meat added to the mix. I feed these three meat sources every meal and usually add a table spoon of pumpkin or swee potato as well as a tablespoon of yogurt in the evening and in the morning they get a tablespoon of of oatmeal no yogurt and fishsh oil capsule. Just a quick glimpse of how I feed my dogs Im not the perfect example but I think im doing a fairly good job if anyone esle can add please chime in.:)
