Cane Croso mistaken for a Pittbull?

Today someone was whispering about Stella being a boxer, I said she is actually a cane Corso, but people often think she is part boxer. Then I was talking to my bf and I was considering having fun with it and just making up a new name/breed every time someone asks me what she is. Oh, ya she is actually a pure breed Jamaican mastiff lol.

Most people who aren't dog "savy" will call anything "pit bull" My danes were called pitbulls, heck my oldest BLUE GREAT DANE was called a St. Bernard.

Hi Kbuchanan66, to be honest, I'm right there with you! I have a 10 month old Corso who is ALWAYS mistaken for either a huge pitbull or a tall black lab. I can't tell you how many breeds people seems to think he is, when I assure them that there's no mix and that he's pure bread they just look at me like I'm crazy.

The CC is a rare breed almost everywhere. I am not suprised very few can guess correctly. I am just amazed the guesses people make, you can't blame them obviously as out there in the real world more popular breeds seem to rain supreme in peoples minds. I mean not everyone watches the West Minister Dog show since they were kids (Guilty Pleasure).

Oh no a Pit bull called a Rottweiler? Not even the same coloring?

My Rott/Mastiff (Who is a deep red) gets called a Rott by people and it actually suprises me as he does not have the Black and Tan that makes people assume. I guess I am amazed because they are looking past the color (Which doesn't usually happen). Sometimes I really do feel like rewarding the people who guess right. Lol

I just came from picking up my kids at school, and the security guard actually told me that I have to remove my viscous pit bull from the property....lmao. I have a 9 week old CC. Yep, she's pretty menacing, all 20 lbs of slobber and wrinkles. I always say, you just can't fix stupid!!!

Oh, I made sure I told all the other parents that were there that she most definitely is not a pitbull, as she was attacking their children with slobbery kisses. Lol

I just don't let it bother me. The few people that have said nice pit/sick pit... yadda yadda yadda I don't really want knowing what kind of breed I have. Too many yahoos needing a status symbol and too many poorly bred CC out there as it is. I don't want my breed to be the next on the hit list, so I smile and nod. Mainly 'cause I am happy that they don't know what she is. If they are truly interested in the breed then I will take the time to talk, explain and introduce :)

While I can't yet relate to breed confusion with mastiffs(we will be getting our first next year), I can relate with the irritation of people.
I can't tell you how many times people jokingly call my Yorkie a rat. Yeah, it's all in good fun and once or twice is okay but when you run into people on a regular basis that do it, I get annoyed. Not even remotely similar to what you guys are experiencing though. Also, a minor pet peeve of mine is when people call her a "tea cup" Yorkie. There is no such thing. She is simply a super small(poorly bred) Yorkie. Although, I did once have someone mistake her for a Norwich Terrier which I find incredibly interesting. Norwich Terriers are not incredibly common in the US and Ruby (aside from her small size) is a very traditional looking Yorkie.

When I saw Trinity as a three month old puppy, I'll admit, I figured she was a pit or a boxer, maybe a mastiff... I didn't really know and had never heard of cane corso before. What I did know is that I didn't care, I just wanted to get her sad little scared self out of the loud, abusive house she was in. A few minutes later I had her and her vet file and we were out of there. She's been like daily education since, for me... and everyone lucky enough to meet her. :smirk:

I like people like you. Recue from bad situations and not really careing what kind of dog it is, just that it needs to be cared for.

Thank you!
