cane corso's ears wont stand.... advice needed

Hi everyone,
My name is Jenelle and I have a 14 week old female cane corso named Stella. I got Stella's ear cropped a little less than a month ago (she had had the stitches out for about 10 days). As of right now her ears look great except for the fact that they just lay on top of her head. The vet that did the crop told us we would not need to tape them and that they would eventually stand on their own. However, many people are telling me that they could potentially never stand, and that really really makes me concerned. My boyfriend and I tried taping and she gets it off in no time. Then we taped it around her head (the tape went around her neck if that makes sense). well, although that was very secure, within 48 hours her neck area had a horrible reaction and her skin was all swollen and infected. after her neck healed we tried the moleskin and she hated hated that, and she got one off within 5 hours, plus the surgical glues we used got really hot and she cried when we first put it on. The whole thing is making me very emotional. I had a friend that had such an easy experience with her cane corso's ear crop.

I plan to call the vet that did the crop tomorrow, but I want to know if anyone else has had a similar experience. Should I wait longer to tape, post, etc... or should I be concerned that they are not standing yet?

any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)

Relax you still have plenty of time for them to stand so don't panic. Do you massage her ears at all. I would start with that if you don't, get some lotion (I use baby stuff incase they might react to perfumes in the others) and sit with her and just rub them gently pulling them up and into the shape of where they should be. This will help increase the blood flow to the ears and help harden the cartiliged where you need it. If it still isn't great then ask the vet about posting and to show you a way that will work to keep it on for a few days and then take it off to give the dogs ears a rest and time to breath. Just a heads up, when they start teething some will have floppy ears again for a bit.

I do massage the ears, but they stand for less than a minute, so it feels pointless lol. however, I still do massage the ears because I am willing to do whatever it takes to get them to stand. How long would you say it takes for them to stand? Like when should I start taping if they are not standing on their own? Thanks for calming my nerves though, I was starting to get very anxious.

Some take longer than others depending upon how long of a crop it is. We rub our dogs ears 4 or 5 times a day for about 10 minutes at a time. If it doesn't seem to be improving in a week then I would contact the vet and get them to show you the best way to post them that will stay on a couple of days. Again I wouldn't panic at this point... we had one ear that was still doing something funky until about 8 mths.

My 5 month old cc ears were crazy for a while and she got her ears cropped at 101/2 weeks so that was 10 weeks ago. one was good then the other was better. (look at the pic in my avatar). Relax like Mary said and have patience this is not going to happen over night, but they will eventually stand. Continue with the massage and try posting if all else fails. Are they healed yet? Luna took like 6-7 weeks to fully heal, I would be more concerned with them healing first before standing. Luna started losing teeth and one floped again but now at 20 weeks Lunas ears are almost perfect. Every dog is different because all the ears are not the same. Good luck and shes a cutie pie!!

Well, we got one ear up! the other one is being a little bit more stubborn, but I am very confident that everything will work out just fine. It is slightly odd but we got them to stand by actually taping them down lol. I cannot tell you what a relief it was to see at least one of her ears up! thanks so much for the advice, I think the massaging has been helping a lot. Hopefully the other one is up soon :)

She is looking good... the other one will come up I am sure if you keep at it!

just wondering, why crop their ears ?

Personal preference, to preserve the historical look of what a Cane Corso should look like, to assist in lessening the ear infections, etc. Not that I think anyone needs to justify their reasons to anyone else. But if you are opposed then please don't turn this into a thread about how cruel it is, we have heard it all before and aren't really interested in hearing it again.

I was just wondering, since it is not allowed where I live and I've never seen a dog with cropped ears IRL.
I just thought there must be a good reason for it, since it can't be cheap to have performed either.... sorry for my ignorance on this matter...

No I apologize for being bitchy about it :( We have just had a lot of post when people ask for help with ears of people telling us how cruel we are and that we are bad owners and shouldn't have our animals, etc, etc. but I shouldn't have made the assumption that you were going to do that without giving you a chance to reply.

For that I am extremely sorry.

no harm done - I was just curious and got my answer !
Impressive dogs these CC's, not a dog for our family but they look fantastic and must be a super dog to train with.

Sadies Mom>> you're rigth, no cropping af ears or docked tails in scandinavia, has been forbidden the last 15-20 years I think.
