Cane Corso puppy food help

Hello. I know this question might sound boring, but i just got my lovely Cane Corso puppy today, and i am trying to find out what would be the best dry food for her.
The kennel owner told me he feeds his corsos royal canin, which sounded strange to me, considering it is a really good kennel.
I had my Labrador & Sarplaninac on Pro Plan and did pretty good, and also switched to Orijen for a bit.
I keep hearing stuff such as selecting a brand with reasonable but not excessive amount of protein, that i should watch out for Calcium levels(?), and that i may not have to go on puppy food.
I dont really mind about the price, just trying to find the best option.
Any help?
Thanks

I'm sure you will get some responses, it's slow today. We feed raw so I can't be of much help. You could try the search function, there are a lot of threads about how to choose a dog food.

You need tO check phosphorus and calcium levels ratio abt 1.2. C alcium should be btn 1.2-1.8. 1.2 is better.i feed my cane corso acana pacifica or wild prairie, others here feed earthborn hollistics. You can find a lot of threads on this subject

Thanks for the info. Seems i ll try acana first aswell. Do you think i should avoid the large breed puppy option and star straight with the normal ones like wild prairie? Thanks

Yes, avoid the large breed puppy option. Stick with normal ones or one for all life stages. I would also go with Grain Free...lots of mastiffs have issues with grains. I currently feed Earthborn - Meadow Feast or Costal Catch. She loved both of them for a while, now she seems not so interested. Think I will give Acana a try.

Yeah i've been feeding my pup Acana Pacifica and wild prairie since i got her. Sometimes i buy a bag of Orijen 6 fish or Orijen adult but some pups find Orijen too rich it gives them diarrhia. But these 4 are definetely apriopriate for growing pups. AS well as the eartborn hollistics mentioned above.

Had both of my Corso's on Nutro Ultra. Ome male passed away at 12 last year, and now have an 11 month old Male. Had them on Nutro LB Puppy until 9 months, then switched them to adult. Never a problem. Anyway, it works for our guys. That also includes our 3 Yorkies.

I have a new Cane Corso puppy also, and decided to go with "Newman's own" dog food. I researched every brand of dog food that all my local stores had. It could not find any brands locally that were higher ranked, and the price I feel is quite reasonable.

Is your puppy used to eating dry kibble? If he is and you don't want to wet then I wouldn't bother with it. We always wet the food even on the adults as I like it to be as expanded as it is going to be before it hits their bellies just in case of bloat.

I visited my vet today...i really trust him since i ve know him for 20 years and he s been excellent with any problem i had. He really argued about me feeding my puppy Acana. His basic arguments were that royal canin has been in the market for ages, they spend so much money in research, and they really cant be overseen for a company that has been in the market for a few years... I am really confused on this.... He suggested i should feed royal canin puppy large breed, and not because he sells that brand, but because its definately more trustworthy...

My 11 year old chocolate lab we put down about 3 months ago. His health was deteriorating quite quickly and we took him to the vet. Our vet checked him over to see if he could find anything wrong with him. Our vet was amazed with our dogs teeth. Even asked us how often we had them cleaned. We had never had them cleaned, and never used any type of bone to clean his teeth or anything. The only explanation why our deteriorating dog had the best senior teeth he had ever seen in a dog was that his entire life he was on dry food only. The dry food helps scrape the junk off the teeth.

Our dogs appetite was going, so we switched him to wet food that was more enticing, and in a week I saw his teeth turn from pearly white to brown.

My cane corso only eats dry food needless to say.

I have a 9 months EM and before we got him I was this close from getting a cane corso and I did do a lot of my research before I got mine...

So for the first 3 to 4 months I mixed wet dog food in his kibble. I fed him Nutro Large breed for the first 5months then switched it to regular large breed 0-1yr Nutro without any grains and by products. I chose lamb and something I can't remember.

You can mix in Yogurt and meat broth too. It's good for them and they love it. Milk is not good for them as I use to think it was good for them. I sometimes mix in raw eggs one or two in winter time. Not recommend in summer as it can be hot for their stomach in summer.

Just sharing my knowledge... Congrats on the new pup. Don't forget to socialize him at early age. As it can be too late later on. Also do a good research on the vet in your area as some vets here are big rip offs .

Puppy Chow has been on the market for ages as well and I would not feed that to my dog if you paid me. It can be difficult when your vet gives push back about your choices. But remember...you are the owner. Does he have experience with Corso's? Is he aware that the calcium and phosphorus ratios are important? I think it's best if you do some research and see what brand you are more comfortable with. Ojijen and Acana are both made by Champion Foods. You can do a search on the company and you can also review many, many dog foods on Dog Food Advisor.com and see where each brand ranks. At the end of the day it's your choice and your pet.
