Cane Corso Advice Needed

Hi! I'm new to the Mastiff Forum, and very excited to read through all of the advice posted on this site.

I will be picking up my Cane Corso puppy in about two weeks! I am very excited!! I have been around dogs my whole life, but this is my first Cane Coros. She will be right around 10 weeks when I will be able to get her from the breeder. The breeder has been very helpful with tips and other information specific to the breed. I would love any advice on the "do's" and "don'ts" as well as any training advice you could give me. Thanks in advance!!

CC's are easy to train. They want to please you and are very intelligent.
I personally start using food making training a game and the most fun EVER.
Short sessions and keep it fun :) I also recommend puppy classes mainly for socialization.
Post some pictures, we love babies!

Thank you for the response, Cody. I'm struggling to find puppy classes close by in Ohio. The only one's I've found are at places like PetSmart. Any suggestions.?

Welcome Brittany
That's an adorable puppy!

Here is a trainer I highly recommend in your area about 30 mins from your city.

Welcome to the board and to the wonderful world of corsi :) They are a wonderful breed and will have you trained in no time to do exactly what they want ;) :p

Congrats on your new addition.

I have been taking Sadie to Petsmarts classes. We have had great success. And the best part is you can take the class as many times as you want. There are some people that have not had such good luck with Petsmart, but I have been very satisfied with the training. It all depends on the trainer, I guess. Now they will call me and ask me if I want to take more classes, especially if they have a class with only one or two dogs in it, to "fill" it up. But at the end of the day...Consistency and patience will pay off. Good Luck with your new addition:eek:

Hi and welcome and congrats on you beautiful puppy!!! Have fun and enjoy them small because they grow so fast!!! Puppy classes are very good even just for early on socialization. These classes can help you identify her personality and bond with each other. There is nothing like owning a Corso. I think I can speak for all of us on here, these dogs are truly amazing from their love and loyalty to agility, willingness to please and quick learning. If you put the time into it you will be amazed how fast they learn good and bad habits so be careful and set rules and stay consistant and love her really love her!!!! Looking forward to watching her grow and post lots of pics!!!

Socialization. Socialization. Socialization. My 1st corso I got from a breeder at 16 months and he was a kennel dog not use to things outside his pack. And he was 120lbs of solid muscle and no one would come near him. At that point it just has been a constant up hill battle.

On the other hand, my girl, who I got at 8 weeks and didnt miss a weekly obedience class for about 3-4 months. I used the class more for socialization since there where never less than about 20 other pups. She just happened to be a super sweet girl to with people and dogs. I know temp has alot to do with how a dog will be but socialization essentially helps shape that temp too....imho.

I completely agree with Cody. Food makes it a lot more fun and a lot easier to get results.

Ivan sits, shakes, lays, stays and will not touch his food until he is told. Treats outside for bathroom time have really helped his house training aswell. My father has had so many dogs over the years and was completely blown away at the intelligence that these dogs have.

Welcome and i look forward to pictures

Sadies Mom- Thanks for the PetSmart advice. I am signed up for the owner meeting to go over some general puppy advice. I'm planning on working with Piper for about two weeks then taking her to PetSmart to meet some friends....your girl is adorable

Bekkareea 320- She's already growing so fast and I haven't even gotten her yet :( It is taking longer than expected due to the fact that my breeder's vet is on vacation at the moment. She will be getting her ears cropped next week. Another week to heal, and she's all mine :)

Bren- Those are some impressive tricks. Are you working on the drop it command. I was curious as to how to train that one??

Biggcliff- Thanks for the socialization tips. That is definitely my main priority. I am a teacher at a public high school. My goal with Piper is to get her to become a "Reading Buddy." Many schools in the area have a program where dogs are able to come in and listen while the students read. The dogs serve as a non threatening/non judgmental listener. I have seen many kids make huge strides from reading to dogs. In order to make this happen I need to follow your lead with the puppy classes!
