Bumblebees

Every time I take Lettie outside lately there are always a few bumble bees, and regular bees around. She is getting too curious. I’ve been telling her “leave it” but she doesn’t always listen if there is something that interesting right in front of her. I’m on my lunch break right now and I’m terrified she’s going to get stung when I have to go right back to work. So I’ll ask now, before I need the information.... What do I do if she gets one, or one gets her? I’m afraid she is going to try to eat one. Do I need to rush her to the vet or is it something Benadryl will take care of? And if so, how much do I give her?

The not great answer is that it depends. Kind of like people. Some dogs react very badly and some don't. I would definitely give Benadryl immediately if one of my dogs was stung. Benadryl dose is 1mg per pound of body weight, but my vet always tells me to limit Ella to three maximum. What I would probably do is call your vet and tell them you're being proactive because Lettie is very interested in the bees. Ask what their recommendation is. The bigger worry to me are wasps. Bees are logical. Wasps are insane. Maybe try the plantain I posted about too. Couldn't hurt anything.

As an aside ... we call this being "Scenario Girl." My daughter and I have learned that we can de-escalate some of our anxiety by being "Scenario Girl" and thinking about all the possible (outrageous) outcomes or possible instances of things and planning what our response will be. So that if the time comes, we already have a plan in place. Be Scenario Girl. Scenario Girl served me well last night. Just do it! :D

Diesel is allergic. He needs rushing to the vet when he gets stung. He also finds them fascinating and so does Kahlua. Kahlua has yet to get stung so I have no idea if she has an allergy.

And yes wasps are the very worst. When I see a wasp I flip out and usually beg the husband to spray wasp spray on every nook and cranny even if I don't see a nest.

The other thing that works great to keep them away are dryer sheets (original scent not pretty scent). Just regular bounce dryer sheets. They HATE dryer sheets. Wasps hate them and so do bees. Hang them up around the house where they seem to like to go and they will stop.

How did you find out Diesel was allergic to bees? what are the symptoms? I've never even thought about them getting stung by a bee or wasp...something new to learn.

Sophie got stung on the paw by a bee when she was a pup. She cried and yelped and howled. Her paw was so tiny, and it swoll up and was itchy. I used the plantain and benadryl. Helped her a lot.

Poor Sophie. I never had a dog get stung by a bee, at least I don't think they ever did. :p

She's the only one I've had that's gotten stung. I had a Rhodesian that would jump in the air and catch them. Wasp, bees, he even tried catching airplanes.. lol. He would save us from all the winged creatures. :)

Thanks for all the replies! All very good advice! We will be buying Benadryl and original dryer sheets today. I’m going to be covered in dryer sheets from now on. I hate bees! I completely over react and run away screaming. Lettie thinks I want to play and starts chasing me and play-bowing.

You know what upsets me almost as much as bees? THAT I SPELLED THE TITLE OF THIS THREAD SO SO WRONG!! I hate when I don’t catch my spelling mistakes in time  Stupid bumblb bees ;)

Oh, stop beating yourself up about misspelling the thread! We all do it. No big deal, we all replied & knew what you meant. Always keep Benadryl in the house, for yourself as well.

I don’t know why we don’t have Benadryl! We are just both lucky enough to not have allergies I guess.

He got stung and his head swelled up to twice the size. We drove as fast as we could to the vet. He thinks flying things are great toys but it is very bad for him.

Georgia eats them. She very seldom yelps. My dad had a blue healer that would look for bees. She would stand over a yellow jacket ground hole and get them coming and going.

Ahh that sounds terrifying! Oh my.... I have enough trouble with worrying too much. I think I would have heart failure from watching that

You guys are giving me anxiety from just reading this stuff lol:p

I understand your anxiety, but have also seen dogs chasing/eating them (no Mastiffs). Sometimes I ask myself how our grandparents treated dogs. They weren‘t concerned about orthopedic beds, organic meat, and the dangers of life. I‘m not saying that this is good or bad. Just so different, and their dogs were fine, too.
Too many things to worry about :)

I often think about that also Tyler. Dogs are very resilient. Kids as well!
