  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Boone started limping :(

...Last night. No bumps, no jumps, absolutely nothing happened! He woke up from a pre-dinner nap, came out to say hi to us, turning his bum to us so we can scratch the area above the tail. Lay down, rolled, and was sitting comfortably for a while. Got up to go pee, and WAS LIMPING! Trying to take weight off his front right leg from what I can see.

I'm trying to arm-twist the vet to see him today. Any ideas? (I'm hoping for growing pains, please cross fingers for him :()

If your vet can't get you in right away just keep an eye on him and try to keep him from goofing off in the mean time. It might go away on its own.

Yeah, vet ain't sitting today (Sunday!!!). I'm hoping it goes away on its own as well, considering he wasn't doing anything (other than sitting) when it happened.

Looked up pano first!!! I can't tell cuz I've never seen it myself, and don't wanna make it worse.. For now, trying (really hard) to make him stay down.. Called the vet multiple times, he's asked me to take it easy with Boone (so no walk today, and he hates me :() crossing fingers for tomorrow morning and hoping its pano :)

I would not be overly concerned my self. Just the circumstances and his age is why. Get him looked at but dont worry your self

Lol! Thanks Chuck!
He's started really keeping the weight off that leg today. I'm waiting with bated breath for the appointment!

Thank you cookie and thelady for your wishes!

Our first puppy woke up one morning with a limp (when he was ~6 months old)... I freaked out, too... ran him to the vet... had x-rays... NOTHING! The vet never mentioned any named issue (i.e. pano), but this was 19 years ago... she just wrote it off to a soft-tissue problem that would work itself out. And it did. We figured he slept hard on it funny or something. :)
Now, I don't worry -too much- about limps unless they bother the dog enough to make them avoid chasing squirrels. Then I figure it must be serious!

When's the vet visit? Any updates?
I hope it gets better soon.

Vet visit done! Last night, but I was too pooped after driving in that horrendous traffic to post the update :D

Well, first, I changed vets because I FINALLY found someone who supports the Raw diet! The only thing he adds is that Boone'll probably need a little more deworming than normal because of the kind of meat we get here. Yayyyyyyy! Plus this guy isn't the "I'm going to give shots/medication/whatever else I can pass off" if the dog doesn't need it (like the one I was going to earlier - Boone got a shot every single time whether he needed it or not!). Plus, he also deals with alternative medicine (like homeopathy)!

Coming back to the thread, apparently Boone has a weird (genetic) issue where his body isn't absorbing the calcium it's getting the way it should. (His sister is facing the same issue, I'd called to check. BYBs ) . And now with his growth spurts, at the time when he's looking plump (right before he grows and looks lanky), there's extra load on his joints which, due to his calcium absorption thing, he compensates for by putting more pressure on his shoulder. AND because of this, his paws are also turning outwards a little bit.

The right shoulder he'd probably bumped somewhere a couple of days ago and when he sat down that night and got back up, the pain must have come in full force, causing the limp.

There's some homeopathic pills he's on, which should work to repair whatever damage is there. Plus, I have to start taking him out swimming. No walks till his legs are better, which, because it needs to be done gradually, might take a couple of months.

Nothing to worry too much about, I'm assured :). Apparently, we caught it in time. Another couple of weeks and the calcium thing might have caused long term really damaging issues. So the fact that he started limping is a bonus for us.

Yeah, and just for fun, I called the previous vet today. He asked me to bring Boone in for vitamin shots! Which he's given four times already! I'm glad I don't have to go back there.

The hunt for a dog friendly swimming pool begins today!

Good to hear. My 6 mth DDB started limping and nothing showed up on the X-rays we had either so it was put down to grow pains. We stopped all exercise for a good week and the limp has sorted itself out. Lulu also sleeps quite awkwardly at times which doesn't help but it can be stressful all the same when they start. We only walk her every other day now and that is just round the block. Until she has got through this stage we will just monitor the exercise and see what happens......good luck and also glad you got a good vet
