Ya I was thinking of doing half chicken and half beef on the reg. and then occasionally substituting the chicken with some "special" meats like rabbit, bison, etc. lately she has just been getting beef and pork with a small amount of raw meaty chicken bones. Even the liver and organs she gets is beef and lamb.

I also don't have the packaging for the pork anymore because i portioned it into bags already, but I really don't think it was enhanced, not 100% sure though. The next time i go to the store I will find out.

Um, yeah: stay away from Gatorade! I can't imagine it being anything but an irritant, especially to a healthy raw-fed puppy... :(

Your rotation sounds good. Have you ever tried fish? Sardines/mackerel/herring are all good for dogs. And maybe try the pork (little piece) when she's back in the pink- maybe she's really okay with it.

I gave her some salmon the other day and she gets the primal brand sardine and turkey.

The only thing I have heard about salmon is that you should freeze it for a certain amount of time before feeding, as there is a parasite that is common to salmon that you do not want your dog to get. The Primal stuff should be fine as it's already frozen...?

I avoid raw salmon due to this- parasites freak me out...

Well have our beliefs: I would never feed my dog raw chicken (or any raw protein) because of Salmonella etc., I just treated Max with Flagyl for giardia-10 days and that did the trick. His stool was similar to what you are describing. I also cut out the rawhide bones. Good luck!

Are you serious? There are people on this board that have been feeding RAW for the lives of their dogs and lives of dogs before them. Ask any of us if any of our dogs ever got ecoli or salmonella poisoning. This alone should be proof enough for you to get over your fears of feeding raw meat to your dogs. Then you should read this article. Myths About Raw: Will the bacteria in raw meat hurt my dog? also I want to say your dog is more likely to to contract salmonella from kibble than raw meat. Kibble sits in the stomach for several hours and ferments with whatever bacteria it has on it from the bag this in turn can infect an animal much more easily than raw meat which only sits in the stomach from 30 minutes to a couple of hours.

I also don't give Stella rawhide, ever. I said raw meaty bones. Good news, her stool was perfect today. Also, if Stella had giardia it would have shown up in when I had her fecal tested.

I have very strict standards with the meat I give my dog and I am very particular about keeping everything clean. Her water bowl is washed multiple times a day, I wipe her face after she eats, and I keep my fridge at a really low temp just to be extra sure the meat doesn't spoil. I believe my standards of cleanliness exceed that of kibble companies.

Also, everything that mike said.

I appreciate the concern.

Yeah! Glad Stella's feeling better today!

As for salmonella... just saw another recall for kibble due to salmonella contamination again yesterday - multiple posts about it here on the forum, too, since there were some high quality versions included. Bacteria is everywhere. It's natural. The dogs deal with it much better than us humans... good thing, too, considering the things Denna will put in her mouth. ;)

^^^Could not have said it better. And, yeah--- I would be very careful to wash those hands after feeding kibble. Seriously.

Agreed! We used to touch kibble and not really think it was a huge deal. My bf also wouldn't wash the food bowl after every meal when he fed sampson kibble. Now that we have learned more about kibble we are horrified about how we had this false sense of security regarding kibble.

Stella had diarrhea AGAIN last night! no blood. I gave her slippery elm yesterday as well. I gave her pork again though because she didnt have issues on Tuesday and I fed her pork on monday.

So on Monday i fed her half pork and half beef (i only fed her dinner at 9pm because I wanted to skip her morning meal to give her stomach a break). Since her stools were fine tuesday morning I decided to give her the rest of the pork (no beef though) on Tuesday. Wednesday I did not see her go potty and i dont think my bf watched her. Last night she had half pork and beef and got sick.

If it was the pork only meal that made her sick when would i see the effects? I gave her the pork only meal on Tuesday night and she had diarrhea Wednesday night, so about 24 hours.

She has been having soft stools for a long time now. and she has been walking around while she poops, like she is straining. She used to do this on every kibble we would try and that is why i switched to raw. And the first 5 weeks of raw she didnt do that anymore. But now it is happening with raw :( what is going on?

What is my next step in figuring out the issue?

I gave her some pepto and little bit of yogurt this morning but no food. I am defrosting a chicken to boil and I thinking about giving her chicken and rice for a few days and then basically starting over with raw. i.e., giving her chicken only for a few days, then adding in beef for a week, and then adding in pork, and seeing the effects. I also am going to go to a holistic pet store tomorrow and get some probiotics. I just dont want to add too many things right now because I want to figure out what is going on.

Also, I have a vet appointment tomorrow. Do you think i just give her an antibiotic while I do the bland diet? just to make sure I am clearing up any potential infection??

One more question... I give her dehydrated beef liver as treats (not every day though). could this be messing up the liver ratio in her meals? should I switch the treats to just dehydrated chicken breast or duck?

Could Stella be stressed out because you are stressed out? You have a lot going on right now and I wonder if she could be getting upset because you are. Antibiotic mess up the balance of enzymes and bacteria in the gut. Unles there is an infection she should not take antibiotics. I might have asked before but do you cook any of her meats or are they all raw? I found that once in awhile my dogs will get some runny BMs but then they are fine the next day and I think it is from treats or someone stashed a chunk of meat days ago and decided it was perfect now and get a little extra bacteria in the stomach causing a loose stool. I give them some raw hamburger mixed with cooked white rice and they settle right down.

I dont think its my stress. I do have a lot on my mind, but I am more at peace in some ways and mainly focusing on saving, but the stress of "trying to make things work" is gone lol. Plus, I have been taking her on walks/hikes more often.

I dont cook her food, its 100% raw.

we just got our yard cleared out yesterday (grass and weeds were making it so I couldn't find where she 'went', plus she was messing around in this muddy area). Im also going to be more strict about her drinking from the streams while on hikes.

I had a small stream in my back yard for a few days last week. Jade does not usually pass gas but last week I almost choked on a bomb. Well I really hope you can get Stella sorted out, I did find out that slippery elm can cause the runs just as easily as it can stop them. Maybe lay off the additives a few days and see if she sorts it out herself?

I know that I have always had dogs with issues with eating pork.
At this point I pretty much just avoid feeding it except as a small treat here and there. Even lean pork seems to be to rich for many dogs.
Good luck with sorting it out and getting to a happy place together.

This^^^ is what gave Mateo the runs (with a bit of blood) recently. Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what it was, as nothing else had changed. I let him drink from a duck pond that he had never been to before. And then, soon after, he had diarrhea. But in his case, it was quickly healed with a short fast and then a gentle meal. So.....I am not sure, either what exactly is going on with Stella. :(

I don't know what to tell you about the anti-biotic; I hate them, myself, and finsd that vets tend to dispense them like candy...

Maybe the best thing is to do a "start-over"--- to kind of "re-boot" her system. But I'm only guessing.
