Bite force (flame wars?)

I just read several website pages with people arguing about what dog has the strongest bite force and every page had several flame wars and many very illinformed individuals. I say it has to be a mastiff for sure but we have what 20 types of mastiffs? Also We all know this SuperBite or lockjaw thing is a joke right!
Now this is just to strik up conversation not competition as I know my SAB is in the medium bite range.

I found this:
malinois - force bite 195 pounds
Dutch Shepherd - force bite 224 pounds
American Pitbull - force bite 235 pounds
German Shepherd - force bite 238 pounds
American Bull dog - force bite 305 pounds
African Wild dog - force bite 317 pounds
Rottweiler - force bite 328 pounds
Wolf - force bite 406 pounds
Mastiffs - force bite 556 pounds (what kind of mastiff?)
Kangal (Turkish dog) force bite 743 pounds (I pretty much knew this)

And this.
Hyena - force bite 1000 pounds
Bull Mastiff ?
French Mastiff ?
What do you all think?

Here is a Kangal type dog. CAS, CAO, Anatolian or BOZ all pretty much the same.

I was reading an article that mastiff bite forces can go up to 1000lbs I will try to find a link

Ruth, No one has even mentioned the TMs I bet they have crunch berry power!

@Aplatitsin, careful with that one it may be 1,000 newtons, which is .22 lbs I think. People often mistake the GSD for 2000 lbs bite force but it is 2000 newtons psi.

There was a national geographic special on this one time, it's posted in a thread around here somewhere with some videos. Pretty interesting.

Didn't know a hyena has basically the strongest bite of them all.

Mike I'd imagine the TM is up there with the CAO and the others. I don't care as such. Its funny, when we play tug I win, but the first time he caught a wild bunny hubby tried to take it away from him......didn't happen......We've worked since on letting us have his prey and he'll let us take it now, but its definetly LET us take it.....

I would think a Bullmastiff or DDB would have more bite power than an EM, just based on musculature around the jaw...but what do I know?

I did know about the bite power of Hyenas...I used to watch a lot of Nat Geo shows.

I'm not sure that shorter snout would be a plus. Though unless someone has a force meter we can borrow I imagine its all a guess anyways.

From some of the reports I've read the shorter, wider muzzles lead to a higher bite force than longer, narrower muzzles because the dog is more likely to bite with the back of the mouth.

I'm actually surprised that pits aren't higher up on that list. Would be interested to see where Dogo Argentinos are on the list

Not sure about the bite force of dogs... but hyenas, yeah-- I watch a lot of Nat Geo as well. Not only do these beasts have an incredible bite force, but they actually start eating their prey while it's still alive (unlike lions who strangle their prey before eating.) It's really wild...

Every report I've seen says pits really don't have that strong a bite in comparison. I don't understand the mechanics of it. Theres to many theories on the whys and hows.....

As do African wild dogs, which I'm sure you're well aware of. That is a much more gruesome scene because of the lesser bite force.

I honestly would think a pit is stronger than a GSD. Depending on what lines the pit is coming from. I've seen some very short, stocky pits that I would actually prefer to be bitten by a GSD than those pits.

Well and thats the other thing, there are several lines of 'pits' though I highly suspect that some dogs such labeled are really bullies, which you'll note are a bit further down the list.

Mastiffs are usually in the top 3, on the charts I have seen. Personally, I go by the "OH SHIT" meter. It usually takes about 1 second for someone to mutter it when they see Cane come around the corner. LOL

Bahaha yeah I think I'd have to change my drawers if I saw Cane aggressively running towards me. Lol!!

Well now this is interesting: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2673787/

I wish someone would do a real life comparison to figure out if their math makes sense

Pretty much. I also have to say that by the time you start talking the mastiff breeds in general I'm not sure if the differences in bite strength really matter, you'd have crushed bones regardless....
