Best age for spaying my Cane Corso puppy

Hi, I have a question. What is the best age to spay my Cane Corso puppy? From what I understand, it's best to spay such large breeds as her after 1 yr of age. But, the breeder I bought her from states that they spay or neuter at around 6 mos of age because it's better for their bone health in these large dogs. Has anyone heard of this? I only want to do what is best for my puppy. Any info is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Carol Smith

If you do a search on the forum here, you will see that the overall consensus is to not spay until after 2 years, when they are fully grown and their growth plates fuse. Have a look around and it explains why and all the problems it can cause if you do spay or neuter early.

Thanks Milton for the reply. Yes, I have read around on this forum and that most on here recommend spay/neuter around 2 yrs of age. That is what I will do because it makes sense to me. But I was wondering, what do you make of the breeder I bought my puppy from to say that spaying/neutering at 6 mos is better for their bones?

Wow. 6 months because it's "Better for bones"??? Better than what?? Is this because the breeder's other option is to spay/neuter when they're 6 weeks??
Not sure what that breeder is talking about... maybe some communication lines got crossed??

Sure, 6 months is "better" than 6 weeks, but 2 years would be much better than 6 months if you're talking about bone health. A lot of growth is regulated by hormones, and when you mess with the hormone balances by removing sex organs, growth can be effected.... so the later you can get the pup 'fixed', the better.

I don't know what the breeder is talking about either, I've never heard of that before. On my GSD and Boxer, I didn't spay and neuter until they were a little over 1 yr old. I just feel it's best, on large breeds, to wait until a year old or so.
