Appalachian Cane Corso

Hi all, new to the forum thanks for having me.We recently lost our adopted Corso to heart failure. She meant so much to us. She was our first Corso and was absolutely wonderful. We would adopt again, but we have a 6month old and won't take the chance with a dog from parents of unknown temperament. That leads us to Breeders. We live in the south New Jersey/Philadelphia area. We have been looking at Appalachian Cane Corso in Harrisburg, PA.Does anyone have any experience with them? We are looking for a family companion with an excellent temperament.Any other breeders in the area? I exchanged some emails with Firehorse but when they found out I wasn't looking for a puppy until this summer they seemed Luke warm toward me. I have also been in contact with Castle guard. Was very impressed with them and even though I told her I would not be ready until summer, she spent close to an hour with me on the phone just talking to me about Corsos and giving me things to think about whether I go with her or not. That's someone I want to get a dog from. Sadly I would like to meet the dogs in person and Colorado is obviously too far from nj. That's what brings me to Appalachian. I called and they were very polite. They seem very knowledgeable, were happy to answer all my questions, and invited me to come see the dogs. The one thing that is different however is that they were telling me how other breeders have gotten away from the original corso in terms of size and bone structure. He breeds his dogs to be bigger than other breeders , and seems to really believe in it. Any ideas/opinions?Thanks for any help

I have dogs from NY, Italica Cane Corso and have used studs from Firehorse Cane Corso (PA) when breeding and have met a few of the dogs from Liberty Cane Corso (NY) and Rivale Cane Corso (NY). I have close contact with PrideNJoyz Cane Corso in PA and Basilicata Cane Corso as well as Windy Pines Cane Corso (WY) and a few others. I haven't had any issues dealing with any of them but approaching as a breeder might be different. It is funny as not long ago friends that are breeders were discussing how size seems to be becoming a big issue for a breeders often having over-sized dogs in the right, and wondering if the standard as written for the AKC is becoming a detriment to the breed. The breed while still a mastiff it is meant to be one of the most agile of the mastiff breeds, able to work and run all day but with enough substance and mass to support it being in the mastiff category. In the end it should be a balanced dog that is able to carry its weight for an extended period of time and not show strain from it, it should not be the size of a neo or hitting weights of a smaller mastiffs. I haven't had dealings with the breeder in question so hopefully someone will have some insight on them to provide.

Thanks Shadow,That's exactly what the breeder was saying. That he is trying to breed true to the akc standard. My wife and I are most concerned with health and temperament. It was so hard on us losing our corso. I know no dog lives forever and that there are things we can't control, but we would like to enjoy the better part of a decade with our dog. After what we went through loosing our girl, to have to go through that again in a year or two or three would be brutal

We got Bunchy from Stonecroft down near Williamsburg. It would be a few hour drive for you and it was almost 3 hours for us but it was well worth it. She was very helpful and we did a visit to see her facilities and meet all her dogs about 6 months before we purchased a puppy from her. He is the best dog I've ever had and all of her dogs are just plain awesome.
