Anyone here have a love for hunting?

I don't personally, but I married a man who does :)
My husband loves to hunt. Primarily deer (we don't buy meat other than chicken) but he has been known to hunt pheasant and grouse in the past (something I wish he'd start again, I love slow-roasted pheasant). We just recently finished the year's butcher, actually. Three deer, all does, more than enough when you factor in our dairy steer.
I know we've got at least one boar-hunter on here too ...

Same as Marrow. I don't but the boyfriend and father do so they keep us up to date in wild meet. They hunt just about anything that has a season in our area and we eat what they get, and the dogs get their shares as well :)

Marrow - Do you have a recipe for pheasant you could share? We keep getting pheasant from our neighbor and I have no idea how to cook it.

I grew up hunting partridge with my dad, but don't hunt anymore. I would totally get into bird hunting again though if I knew someone that would go with me. My hubby isn't a hunter (shocking because we live in WI).

@Stevesh: Slightly embarrassed to admit I don't actually use a recipe. Usually we rub the whole thing with butter (or olive oil), put it in our slow cooker, and dust the top with seal salt, sage, onion powder, and black pepper then leave it on low all day (or overnight). The butter keeps the meat moist and helps crisp up the exposed skin, and the sage+onion thing is (as I'm sure you know) a classic gamebird combo.

@BlackShadow: Oscar had his first experience with fresh game this year. We butcher our own in hubby's workshop, and Oscar was enthralled to see hanging deer. He sniffed the hides, the tallow scraps, etc. and then was given a (very) fresh femur bone to chew. He enjoyed it for a solid half hour before we heard the cracking sound that signaled a broken head on it. It took me both hands and 5 minutes to find the broken chunk tucked away in his cheeks, but at least he didn't try to swallow it.

Glad to see i'm not the only one who's boyfriends have a ridiculous love for hunting lol I'm just starting out! Oh if you soak wild game in milk for day or 2 it will really help get that gamey taste out of it! Our dogs have gotten pretty spoiled this hunting season lots of deer and what better way to use deer fat than to make treats for the dogs! I've got some pretty good deer recipes haven't gotten the chance for us to do much other hunting since we had our son! Who's already got some toy shot guns I'm suprised he hasn't gotten a real one to get put away until he's older yet! lol sadly for my boyfriend i wanted mastiff's as apposed to coon hounds so no coon hunting for him!

I dunno, I got used to the gamey taste pretty quickly and now it's "normal". If we have dinner at someone's house and they use beef for burgers or roast or something it comes across pretty tasteless.

lol i don't mind the gamey taste personally at least if the stuff is cooked right. The rest of my family however does mind it unless I cook it because I usually like everything I make haha! I'm waiting for someone to kill some birds now so I can try out that recipe! Also can't wait to get the deer meat in for slim jims and summer sausage which in my opinoin is the best part about deer hunting being I like beer and nothing goes better with beer than slim jims and summer sausage! Really wish we'd quit ending up with wine in our fridge. Speaking of beer anyone got any suggestions I haven't tried to many yet considering we're outdoors doing stuff drinkers but I like sitting around and doing a little social beer tasting too! So, it'd be awesome to bring some new flavor to the table! :)

Want a great sauce for deer?

Go buy a bag of frozen wildberry mix from the grocery store...throw it in a pan with a stick of butter and simmer it till ts goopy. Strain it, put it back in the pan....keep reducing (straining and putting it back in the pan....about an hour and 3-4 strains) it until its the consistency of a maple syrup, throw another stick of butter in it....then throw it on some tenderloins that you cooked....ummmm yummmmmmmyyyyyyyyyyyyy
