Another thread about zits.

One last thing. Think back to high school. For the kids that suffered from major acne, it didn't go away in a week or a month. Unfortunately, it is sometimes a waiting game. Keep it clean and dry as best you can. Big hugs to you and Oscar!!!

There is a correct way to use a probiotic. It has to do with the time which I don't recall perhaps someone else does.

I'm not home so I can't remember either of those things! Haha the antibiotic is ceph......something I think! We haven't used a probiotic in a while but had used just something OTC at SAMs club. Our vet said to either use the probiotic or some plain yogurt in his food. I worry about using a bunch of toppers since he has started eating well again.

Best time for probiotics is at night (dogs and humans.) Gives it time to do it's thing without anything new being introduced to the gut.

Poor Oscar with icky poops again! What about giving him something to help solidify them like Imodium?

Sounds like he's on Cephalexin. That's what Jake is on too, he suffers the same thing that you showed in your pictures, but he gets it all over his body as well as his face. I tried to not go the antibiotic route and was trying different things, but my husband wasn't wanting to wait and was insistent on antibiotics, so after fighting him on it I finally gave in. We are keeping him on a low dose of the antibiotic until we see the dermatologist, he seems to tolerate it well and it is keeping the acne at bay. Unfortunately his will clear up with it, but come back shortly after we stop the antibiotics. I have started giving him coconut oil with his food and he is on a hypo allergenic food, we have an appointment with a dermatologist in April for him so hopefully we can figure this out.

That's it! I'm hoping if we can get it under control we can keep it clean. We already give coconut oil too but have for a long time for other reasons! I hope jake gets better! I'll be interested to hear what the dermatologist says!

He was seen by a dermatologist last year when he was recovering from his leg infection and my vet kept in contact with her until she moved to Vermont. She was the one who recommended the long term antibiotics and changing the food, she thought it could be a food allergy and that he was sensitive to meat proteins. He's on a prescription diet that the proteins have been broken down so much that his body isn't supposed to react to it, plus his dog cookies are all grain free vegetarian cookies which are not easy to find, but there's a Canadian company that makes a few good ones that he likes. I will for sure let you know what this new dermatologist has to say when we see her.I always tried to feed him the best quality of food I could, raw is not feasible for us and I was very hesitant to put him on the vet food, I know all of the complaints about vet's pushing their food and have those same hesitations, but after all he's been through I needed to try something different.

Quick update: oscars zits are pretty much gone!!! Woot! He has some scarring on his chin from them though :( and also a few that are still hanging on. We did two rounds of antibiotics and were crazy about wiping his face, pulling his water, giving him coconut oil, Stridex pads, topical spray and bathing/washing his chin. Who the hell knows what worked but yay! Now I've got to form the poop back up hah...yogurt helped some with the antibiotics and it isn't always soft but it could be better. It's always something :).
And a picture from the other morning because it's funny and why not!

What a change! Lillie's cleared up after she was on antibiotics for and ear infection, they came back a little bit but we too were using stridex pads, wiping, changing water etc until the BF gave her some spagetti... Seemed like we were back at square one, but everything is healing up again, now.

I'm curious what kind of chews you give oscar? I'm not giving Lillie bone's anymore because I think the moisture and sliminess wasn't helping any, but I don't want to take away her buffalo horns, too.

It's a never ending battle! He gets freeze dried beef liver and most recently lamb lung (ew)....he gets the occasional dental stick but that's really it. Coconut oil on his food...a few tablespoons a day and some yogurt when he's on antibiotics for his belly. Oh and a raw egg here and there...gosh the more I write I think what a brat he is :)

Dozer's had really, really bad acne since the day I got him--like Oscar's but probably two or three times as many pimples. The wrinkles around and under his mouth in addition to his big floppy dewlaps make it easy for moisture and bacteria to get trapped. Benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide both bleached his hair, chlorhexidine pads didn't do anything, and ACV (even undiluted) probably wasn't strong enough. The only thing that has worked is not feeding him out of a bowl, and drying his face really well every time he drinks or eats. At first I thought it might have been an allergy, but now I'm pretty sure it's bacteria. It seems like it's really easy to get pimples, but such a struggle to make them go away! I hope you find something that works soon!

i'm pretty skeptical about whether stuff works or not , from seeing time alone take care of so many issues ....... i used that stuff on some pups one time and they all seemed to clear up simultaneously .... it may have just been timing , but i'd try it again ......

I'm going to finish this bit of yogurt I have and he has like 2 more pills to take this afternoon...if it doesn't start firming in the next couple of days then I'll def look into a probiotic of some sort
