Another thread about zits.

Oscar's Mom...I never answered your questions. Max is almost 2. Fixed at 19 months. Hibiclense is the same as Chlorhexadine soap and I bought it at the pharmacy. I hope poor Oscar clears up soon!
Hahaha you're fine! It's a lot of reading in a wall of text! Thanks! He definitely seems to be on the mend but it's such a mess it's gonna take some time!

Busy bee! I bet angus misses her :(Chamomile tea is a good idea...I think I heard that somewhere before. We've been using the Stridex pads regularly and I think better! It's amazing how much funk is on his chin! Ick. Bet appt Wednesday's but I'm staying away from steroids. Maybe antibiotics to get the bacteria and infection out!
Our eldest daughter hasn't live at home for 7 years so Angus isn't missing her...before his time as we say. Our youngest daughter on the other hand - that's his girl! Yes those zits are gross inside. I'm sure you'll ask plenty of questions to the vet but some antibiotics really seem to do a number on the poop end of things. Hopefully they prescribe a gently one for Oscar.

Dumb question but isn't all water fluoridated? Tap water that is? Bf is a dentist but we drink filtered water from a reverse osmosis system. I honestly should probably be giving Oscar that too though

I grew up without fluoridated water in E. Washington... but Seattle has been fluoridating since 1968, and most of the cities around here just buy post-treated water from Seattle.

Portland, OR just bucked the trend a year or two ago and voted against adding fluoride.

There is some natural fluoride, but it's a different form, and not nation-wide.

Interesting that your dentist BF goes with RO water... my dentist still wants to give me fluoride treatments... but more studies are showing that once you get 'enough' fluoride, more is not beneficial, and can be harmful.

What's RO? A lot more fluoride can be harmful, but typically that amount isn't in water...but what do I know ha! I definitely should be giving him filtered! When they started adding fluoride to the water, tooth decay went down about 60%. That doesn't help oscars zits though hah ;).

I have used witch hazel on cotton rounds and let it soak in. Seems to work well on Vinny.

I can't believe I forgot about tea. Do a search on using black tea and nettle tea. Black tea is great for a lot of skin irritations and infections. Nettle tea is my go-to for many things and it's good for acne. Keep that one on hand for UTIs as well (for you too). Turmeric masks and pastes (made with things like raw honey, yogurt and acv) work well for people, but I don't think Oscar wants you to make him wear a facial mask.

Ok so Oscar went to the vet today! I cannot say enough about how much I love our vet. I'm super opinionated and have a lot to say whenever it comes to the care of my dog and our vet is so great! He took a sample to look at it under microscope but assured us after that it was folliculitis. He didn't want to do antibiotics at this point because he thought it would stress his system and unnecessary at this point. He gave us a topical antibiotic and instructions on more of the same...clean bowls, wipe chin, keep using stridex pads. Oscar is on their Facebook page :)https://m.facebook.com/RichmondRoadVetClinic

Excellent! Hopefully, this is one and done. Once you get it under control, try to keep it as dry a possible. We walked around with a cup towel over our shoulder, any time he would get a drink we would pat his chin dry. We took away all Cane's chew toys. After he would chew on a recreational bone he would break out. He loved them but it wasn't worth the break out. Chew toys hold a lot of bacteria. We did switch to ice. He got to were he loved to chew ice.

That is good news no antibiotics! We have jowl towels in every room just for Angus - separate loads of laundry on steam setting with no softner but worth it to keep the big baby zit free.

Stupid question I see you like to kiss your dog do you put on any perfume or oils with fragrance ?
Haha I do! I only use lotion on my face nightly and aquaphor on my lips (which I've used on his nose in the past when he had a healing scratch). Nothing has changed with my routine in the past couple of months and I've kissed him since we've had him haha. The combo of spray antibiotic and stridex pads seems to be helping. Decreased redness and oozing. It seems a lot drier and to be healing. Here's to hoping!

Check amazon...there is a soap specifically for folliculitis for dogs. I forgot that I used a bottle of that too back about a year ago. It's worth looking into. Oh, and Max still has scars on his face where the worst were.

So we have diligently been cleaning Oscars face with Stridex pad and the spray antibiotic 2-3 times per day. MAYBE there is less redness...maybe. We have been cleaning his food and water bowls after every meal and pulling his water up at times when we're not around to wipe his chin and at night. I wanted to give the spray meds a good try before trying something else. My bf told me to call the vet and concede to antibiotics. Our vet doesn't really want to go this route since the dosage would be so high. I'm good with that...but what do I do? You guys have given me so many options...idk where to start. I hate to spend money on stuff if I don't know if it will help? Should I just go antibiotics to clear it up? What about the Banixx or antibiotics? Steroids? Ugh. I cannot imagine steroids and the amount he would drink and be miserable. Pass

Poor Oscar! Angus's are bad right now too. I'm attributing his to hormones and switched from chamomile tea to Betadyne wash to treat them. It's been drying them out a little quicker and all scratchy chew toys have disappeared. We'll send healing vibes your way. Keeping fingers crossed something works soon.

Our Sid's skin issues seem to defy every single thing we try...I can't even guess how many different foods, shampoos, drugs, bathing regimes, bedding changes, etc. Etc. Etc. We have tried. Poor little dude seems destined to itch for eternity. I wish Oscar so much better luck than Sid.

If your vet doesn't think an antibiotic is good for Max. 1. Hang on to that vet!!! 2. I would follow the advise. If BF is insistent I would do no more than one round. If it comes back I would not try a different antibiotic. You want to talk expensive. The last antibiotic they had Cane on for his chin cost 100.00 a week. Wiping his ass with that money would have done more for him then the antibiotic did.

Once we started the antibiotic for the chin, within a month Cane had yeasty ears and feet. Antibiotics are a great drug but need to be reserved for major assaults. While acne can be annoying and even painful it does not usually rise to the level.

Take a look at Chlorhexidine 2% for Horses & Dogs, One Gallon, at Amazon. It is an antiseptic, 17 dollars for a gallon that will last you forever. Read the reviews at Amazon. It may not cure the acne but it will keep the bacteria load down.
