Another thread about zits.

So Oscar has had battled zits on and off on his chin and in his folds. Now...they are out of control. I have no idea why. He eats and drinks out of stainless bowls and his mouth is wiped after he drinks. Every time when we are home.his kibble was switched a few months back to earthborn meadow feast. He's kind of meh about it so next shipment (next week or so) were grabbing a new flavor. He's had poop issues in the past so I'm reluctant to change his food all together because he does well on it (besides the fact that he's no exuberant about it lately. For a while we tried to put some ointment on it that didn't help and now we're doing the ACV Water soliton. Nothing is helping and it is getting worse. I know there are a bizillion threads on here about acne but I just wanted to post my own with pictures and get advice. He is clearly allergic to something I think? Most advice has been for ACV so I didn't know what wlse to do. They look awful and I feel like such a bad mom. We have a vet appointment Wednesday.

We fought this with Cane his whole life. We never could get it completely under control. After doing a ton of research it seems that each dog responds differently to treatments. Raw diets work for a lot, ACV for others, coconut oil, ect....Tons of things to try. Basically, trial and error.

The one thing I caution against is using antibiotics for acne. Cane was on them off and on for the first year and a half. I believe the antibiotics led to systematic yeast infection. Which made the zits even worse and caused other problems. Early on the antibiotics worked but the zits would come back within 3 to 6 weeks and it would be even worse. Many others report this happening with their dog too. You might give one round a try but if the zits come back within 3 months I would think long and hard before giving more antibiotics. Some vets will try to scare you and tell you that without the antibiotics, your dog could get a staf infection and die. Cane was not on any antibiotics the last 5 years of his life and what got him was his hips.

Trial and error. Pull threads that talk about acne and try some of the things that are suggested.

Poor Oscar... I'm battling this with Lillie right now, too. I'm thinking hers is allergy related as well as she broke out terribly and got a crazy out of nowhere ear infection at the same time.

I've tried lots of stuff, too, and what has worked best for her so far is Stridex pads. I got the ones for sensitive skin with no alcohol, and aloe. I saw some improvement within about 24 hours and they continue to clear up.

Also, it was just mentioned in another thread, I think, that Earthborn has chicken stock or something in their "natual ingredients", I'll see if I can find it, but if he's allergic to chicken, he may be getting some unbeknownst to you.

Thanks ab! I have tried the coconut oil and the ACV but will look for other options too. I'm def skeptical of doing any medication because obviously there's something causing it!

Just like stridex pads that I could buy Otc for me? I'm not sure I'm familiar?I'll check on the ingredients too! His poop is so great that I can't imagine changing foods :(

Could it be from him rubbing something that had chemicals or new type of cleaner on it? What about kongs, do you give him those a lot? I can't give Hector kongs, he breaks out from those not from the rubber but from the rubbing action and drool mixed together. What ointment did you try? Try some neosporin.

Yep, plain ole stridex pads.

Here's a couple articles on "natural flavors" I found after it was mentioned previously: What Is Natural Flavoring in Dog Food? | Dog Care - The Daily Puppy

http://slimdoggy.com/what-is-natural-flavor-and-is-it-good-for-my-dog/

Not at all saying you should change foods if you're happy with what your feeding, but just some info in case.

I've tried neosporin before and then my bfs stepdad made us a salve of alum, neosporin and something else...he used to use it on his horses on wounds and such...no luck. No new chemicals but I do clean like a crazy person ...he lays with his chin on the floor all the time

Poor Oscar. that looks horrible. What do you clean with? I had to get rid of all my chemicals and now just use a steam mop with some essential oils in it, due to people allergies.

I clean with traditional cleaners. For the floor specifically I use a swiffer or if I hand mop I use a mild soap. I've never had an issue in the past so it just seems so odd that it's out of nowhere. I'm sure they hurt.

He does, however, drink a lot...like last night he had some water in his bowl and when we got up this morning it was empty. I don't pull his water up at night or when I'm at work. Maybe he's drinking a lot and getting wet? Staying moist?

if you haven't tried benzoyl peroxide it might be worth a try ..... use the weakest strength so it doesn't irritate his skin , i believe 2.5% is as weak as it gets ..........hydrogen peroxide works similar , but i never used it ........ as much as antibiotics have their negative side effects , if the infection is too deep for the topical , there really is no choice ......... maybe try some high end dosages of fish oil , the dog i had this problem with did grow out of it ..........

Thanks marke! Just dab on a couple times a day? At this point I almost feel like we need something to calm it down and start fresh because they are out of control :(
