Another Newbie

Hello, my name is Emily. I just lost my two-year-old English bulldog, that I adored a week and a half ago. My spirit is broken.

It's kind of a long story but I want to share the story of how he died, so it won't happen to another dog.

I bought him The Pet Cooling Pad, from Keepdoggiessafe.com It is a pressure activated cooling pad with this gel pack cooling stuff inside. One day while I was at work he chewed up the gel pack/ cooling stuff inside the pad, swallowed it, and threw it up. He threw up big chunks of the gel pack cooling stuff, so big I don't know how he managed to get that out of him without choking to death. When I came home from work he was having seizures. So I rushed him to the ER, They gave him a Valium and sent us home. When we got home he was still having seizures, still throwing up, and I was worried that he was too sedated to be able to throw up so I rushed him back to the ER. They kept him in ICU overnight, the seizures still wouldn't stop, so they gave him anesthesia and a breathing tube. His heart stopped in the hospital the next day.

I tried to get a hold of the manufacturer of the pad, and they would not tell me the chemicals or ingredients that were in it. They would say oh I'll call you back in 15 minutes, never did. I'll email it to you, never did. Oh we are in the middle of moving, we can't get the ingredients right now. So I had to have an attorney email them, I don't know if it had anything to do with it but the next thing I know they emailed The chemicals to me. It turns out it had a lot of sodium, which can cause swelling on the brain, which can cause seizures, which could have killed my dog. I don't know if it did for sure, but if you do have a cooling pad just make sure you're supervising your dog while they are around it.

I'm so devastated, so I've been looking for puppies. I've always loved the Cane Corso. So I called up my friend that has one, asked him if he knew a breeder, he does, she has two week old puppies right now!

I'm wondering if you guys think it's a bad idea for me to get one, because I live in an apartment. And, I also want another bulldog, I can't get the Bulldog until about December though.

Are Cane Corsos still happy living in an apartment?

Welcome Emily, I'm so sorry to hear about your pup. RIP little guy~

The CC owners will post a reply to your question re: apartment living. I'm pretty sure they will adjust but they do require adequate exercise.

I am so sorry for your lose. Thank you for sharing your heart breaking story. I have a couple of those, luckily none of my dogs like them, so they are put away. I will get them out and throw them away.

Emily, CCs can do fine in an apartment as long as you put the time in to make sure their energy is drained. Just ensure that you make your breeder aware of it.

Thank you! Yeah, it's a great idea to toss them.

Wow- I have 2 of the exact same cooling pads from keepdoggiesafe.com, but just this morning threw one of them out because it had started to degrade and tear. I have only had the pads for 1 year- you would think they would last longer. Also, they are starting to have a funky smell, that even washing/wiping down does not remove. :(

I had already decided to toss both of them and start with some other, better, product for next summer- thank goodness it's fall now, and the weather is cooling down.

Thank you for posting this! And I am so sorry for you tragic loss. Best of luck to you with the new pup(s).

Am so sorry for your loss :( I would be devastated. A CC can do fine in an apartment but be sure to let the breeder know so that the right pup can be chosen for you. You will find a Corso much different from a bulldog, I will tell you that now. Not that I have ever owned a BD, but I have many friends with them. You will need to exercise more, but I am sure you will find it remarkably easier to train. Good luck with your pup :) May I ask which breeder you are going to?

So sorry for your loss Emily :(

We have a CC and live in a house that I would say is similar to the size of an apartment, on a small plot of land. We just make sure to take a lot of walks and bring Gio to the park on a regular basis - this drains his energy just fine. I also recommend enrolling your new pup in obedience classes as soon as he has all his shots, they're a great way to socialize the pup while also mentally and physically stimulating them.

I would have said "this is Dr. Emily Suchandsuch from NY poison control center, we have a 2 year old patient who has ingested the contents of the cooling pad, I need the ingredients list right now", they'd have given it to you over the phone.

Haha!
I wish I would've thought about that while he was in the hospital!

Another Question I have, is do you think it's okay for me to get my CC and then two months later get a little English bulldog puppy, or would it be better to wait to get the English bulldog puppy?

Emily that is completely a personal preference on what type of dog to get. have you done your research regarding CC's? Mastiffs in general are an AMAZING breed and I can honestly say that I will ALWAYS own a mastiff. :) If you feel you are ready for a pup then do it. Honestly it is up to you if you are ready to take on a pup. Good luck. :)

we have an english bulldog and a cane corso. They have different needs for sure, but they also live together quite well. One thing that is difficult with owning these two breeds is the different physical needs. The CC needs much more exercise than the EB. This means that sometimes we have to take the CC places and not the EB.

Thank you for sharing your story! I was looking at getting one of the cooling pads... guess we'll just save our money and avoid that purchase, now.

So sorry for your loss!! I, too, would be devastated... and looking for a new puppy, as I am lost without canine companionship.

We had a bulldog/boxer mix a few years ago (but due to issues around the house, we re-homed him, and he's much happier, now), and now have a 1.5yr old EM.

Both breeds have their joys and issues. I don't know that I'd want to have 2 puppies in the house just a few months apart in age, though... double the work, double the trouble! :)
I know a number of people do it, so it's up to you and your situation as to how it will all work.

Good luck with the new puppy(ies)! Can't wait to hear how your search goes.
