  • Welcome back!

We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.

Hey, Ill be getting my cane corso puppy in a few weeks. Im here trying to learn all that I can; thanks for so much information!!

I do have one question. I (unexpectedly) rescued a 10wk old kitten a few weeks ago, while I expected at some point to bring a cat into the house I didn't expect it to be before I got the puppy and some training going first. Any major issues I need to be aware of? Both will be seperated when I'm not home and close supervision when I am there....
Also, I have a few names of recomended trainers but if anyone has any suggestions for some around the DFW (Texas) area I'd really appriciate it.

Congrats on the new additions. Just make sure the puppy is gentle and respect the kitten's boundries and they should adjust fine.

We have a cat and she's not socialized one bit since she was an only pet for 10+ years and is totally fearful of our corso. But she still manages to hiss at him and put him in his place when he gets too close to her space. At 8 weeks when he first came home he would try to chase her thinking she was a playmate but he learned fast. I also discouraged him from chasing her to prevent any issues with the cat.

Now at almost 5 months he doesn't even think about playing with her he'll look at her and then go on his way. The fact that you have a young puppy and kitten is great for that situation. They are both so young that their minds are still blank canvas' when it comes to how they interact with other species. In general cats are great at dominating dogs and letting them know what is acceptable behaviour.

I think having them both as babies will be great for them. Hopefully they'll grow up well together - teaching each other about their respective boundaries (as enforced by you, too).

Our 16 year old cat is now on her 4th dog... She was a kitten when our first dog was 3 years old and ~180lbs. It didn't take the dog long to follow the cat's lead. HA!

Every dog since has gotten less and less of a welcome from the cat... but they all respect her. Denna (2 year old EM) still tries to get the cat to play - about once a week - but the cat firmly refuses... and has even stopped stomping away, refusing to leave her cozy spot in the middle of the dog's bed on the floor in my home-office. The cat does still have her claws, but I don't think she's even pulled them on Denna... Denna respects the 'hiss'. :)

I have 3 cats and 2 dogs. The oldest cat wants nothing to do with either dog. The middle cat will allow Kryten to clean her ears but is finally starting to stand up to Jiggers. The youngest cat claimed Kryten as hers within a couple of hours of getting other new home. It did and still does take training 'nicely' to remind the dogs (mostly Jiggers) that the cats are not just interactive squeak toys. This was taken when Monkey (7 weeks) and Kryten (9 months) met for the first time.

Welcome aboard fellow Texan~ I recently researched trainers in the DFW area. Depends on what you want a trainer for as to what trainer to look for. After talking with 8 trainers, I waved my white flag. I decided to do it on my own and it appears to be working.

Of all the trainers I talked to, only 1 trainer had worked with mastiffs. :(

If they grow up together and you are there to instil certain boundaries, all should be fine. However, and I am not sure how accurate this is, be careful with the pup getting into certain cat foods. Apparently it can cause some health issues. My previous vet told me this, hopefully some cat and dog owners can chime in re; this.

I can chime in on this a bit.(Not health wise, although when Apollo first came home got into the cats food a couple times and not a ton of it either but he had no issues from it, would I recommend feeding him it? No, but I would also not worry too much about an accidental bite or two) As long as you make sure the dog knows the cats food is off boundaries you should be good. Our cat is free-fed(Which I would not recommend at all) so her food is out all day and Apollo won't look at it or go near it as I have set that as a boundary for him and corrected him all the times he went near it in the past.

From what I know it's more dangerous for a cat to eat dog food than it is for the dog to eat cat food. I think it has to do with dog food not having something cats need but I'm not really sure right now.
I set a 'safe' room for the cats where they can get a break from the dogs if they want to. This also gave me a place where I can put the litter box and feed them where the dogs can't get it. I then had to teach Monkey that she wasn't supposed to steal Kryten's food either.

i had 2 kittens and the corso.... they were all born in the same month and i received all of them at 8 weeks roughly. had 1 kitten that they gave to me to early, than my corso, than another kitten probably a month later. I just made sure the corso didn't chase them through the house and if i felt like my pup was playing to rough i would correct her. They all get along so well today. they sleep together, and a lot of times i will find the male cat sleeping in the crate...

Thank y'all for all the answers I really appriciate it. I would like to eventually get him into obediance trials -depending on how well I do :)

As for trainers I'm finding 'clicker, lovey trainers' and 'I can't belive you're getting that dog, you can't handle him' types...I'll keep looking but I may be on my own as well.

If you're willing to put in the time and keep a persistent attitude toward training there is nothing stopping you from training him yourself. The internet has many different videos and articles about pretty much everything you're gonna want your dog to know. I am a first time dog owner and have managed to teach Apollo pretty much everything a basic and intermidiete level training course would already at 5 months.

I wanted a trainer to help with Titan's hatred of men. I had a couple of trainers tell me that Titan would have to wear an e-collar and one tell me that he needed to have another trainer and behaviorist there with him to train Titan. One trainer wanted to keep him for 6 weeks and charge $3K. I didn't think sending Titan away for 6 weeks would be beneficial to him. On the forum, joshuagough and Bhk9 are great advisors for training your pup. joshuagough helped me tremendously with training Titan. :)
