Allergic reaction?

Any thoughts? I just noticed his face was looking swollen? He has an old crate pad my bf got out for him today that he was sucking on. It was coming apart so I took it back up. Nothing else has been different...and even that he's been around since he was a baby sucking on it and all. How much Benadryl? He's 195.5lbs

Hmm. Poor guy. You can give him 50mg regular benadryl every 8 to 12 hours. I'd be reluctant to go higher.

thanks so much! I have no idea what he could've gotten into..we've been glued to him all evening..maybe stung outside? I'll try the Benadryl. His paws seem to be itching too and he is panting a bit. :(

Our vet told us 1Mg/ Lb. For Thane that's 180 Mg., 2x a day. That sounded entirely wrong. We called back and double checked. Yes, they confirmed 1 Mg/Lb. Is this wrong??

That is what I've read as well but I always drop it down by one pill at least.

I had a dog with severe anxiety once and the vet suggested Valium. The dose he prescribed was huge compared to what drugs.com said was a normal human dose. I'm
Guessing dogs metabolize drugs differently than humans as the dose just took the edge off and didn't knock him out.

All that being said, I would trust the vet recommendation over something I read on the internet. :)

Oscar seems to be a little groggy this morning but less redness on his face...maybe a little less puffy. He ate and drank and did his normal thing so I'm going to administer the meds like sj said and keep a close eye on him!

I hope his handsome face is back to normal soon. As far as the benadryl dosing goes, yes, 1mg/lb is the normal dosing....for normal sized dogs, lol. Our guys are a bit big for that. The historical maximum dosage for dogs in the literature is 50mg. I believe it was because you don't really get any higher efficacy with higher doses than that, and it can also cause some unpleasant anti-cholinergic effects. So side effects of the higher dose could be increased sedation, cardiovascular effects (increased heart rate), respiratory depression, etc with the same efficacy as the lower dose. It's pretty safe. You're *probably* totally fine with 75 or 100mg, but it's just a safer bet to me to start out with with 50.

Yes thanks! I was hoping you'd chime in! His face is much better this afternoon! Who knows what it was? Also mental note to buy Benadryl pills. Shooting liquid into oscars mouth was an interesting task :)

Good to know the dosage for future reference! Glad Oscar is better today. Hopefully that swollen thing never returns!

Any chance you have any nettles in your yard? Denna poked her nose into one leaf, and blew up like that... some benadryl and a nap, and all was better the next day.

Not that I know?? But maybe haha. We have some things growing up on our fence from our neighbor behind us. We're cutting it back this weekend so if that's what it was it will be gone fast! Thanks!
