AKC registration look-up, help please?

I thought that there used to be a way to search the AKC database and see a complete record for a dog - including owners. Does anyone know if there's still a way to do this for free? I can't seem to find anything but basic information like color and date of birth. I will pay if I have too, but I'd like to check ASAP. As in today. Also, does anyone know how much weight joint ownership on AKC paperwork would carry in an ownership dispute? A contract exists (not formal really, just an agreement for purchase with $ amounts listed, etc) for the purchase of the dog in one name only, but I believe the AKC paperwork has two people listed. All of the veterinary bills are in one name only. The same name on the purchase contract.
Thank you in advance.

I’m sorry, I’m not any help here. Just want to say I wish you luck and I hope things are well with you. Lettie and I send hugs and sloppy kisses.

The only thing I could find was the search that returns color and DOB based on the AKC #. Also, a paid pedigree probably wouldn't help, as those do not include information on the respective owners. They might have removed that type of search because of data privacy concerns. I did go through my profiles online, as well as AKC paperwork, but the certificate is really the only document that lists all the information you are looking for. Have you tried reaching out to AKC directly?

Thank you both for the replies.

Tyler, I haven't contacted them directly. I'm not the owner so I don't know that they would be willing or even able to help me. I'm just gathering information. Informed is armed, in my opinion, and this is too important to not be prepared for every possible contingency.

Jarena, hugs and sloppy kisses graciously accepted. Thank you.

I dont know if its the same there but if a dog here is microchipped they keep every detail you could think of you just need the paperwork that comes with the chip.
When we had the pups i did this then i can find out anything needed in the future.

Unfortunately the AKC registration and the microchip are separate. Actually, I think it's fortunate in this case. I happen to know that the chip is in one name only. The AKC registration is the only thing I can think of that may show more than one name. I'm also fairly confident that there's enough proof in the vet papers, microchip, online presence, and the work the dog performs that the dog wouldn't be taken if this became a legal issue. I am not, however, confident enough to leave everything to chance. I want to be prepared, just in case.

Yes, the AKC registration could show two names. I believe there is a $10 fee associated with adding a second name. At least that‘s how it was when we completed ours months ago. I‘m sure it is possible to have another name added at any point in time. Not sure if this is going to help you at all, but the AKC definitely allows for more than one name.

I wanted to update this in case it could help anyone else. There doesn't appear to be any way to look up who owns a particular dog online anymore, so that's not even an option. What I found out was that if the AKC papers are in two names, you have to get a waiver of ownership signed by the other person to have their name removed. So ... yeah. That's sometimes easier said than done.

Thanks for the update. What value do AKC registrations have from a legal perspective? Would they serve as proof of dual ownership, or would it be solely based on purchase contracts etc?

I honestly don't know and I hope we don't have to find out. I think that if everything else is in one person's name then the AKC paperwork wouldn't have a lot of merit. I would hope that a contract, microchip, and vet bills would be more important proof than just AKC papers. If I find out, I'll be sure to update.
