So when I was at the vet on sunday, my vet told me that english mastiffs (or just any mastiff in general) are considered aggressive. He was trying to convince us to neuter our puppy, so I didn't believe him. Well today I was curious, and they are on the aggressive breeds list? That's crazy!!

Are there any dogs not on that list? Hell, Labs and Golden Retrievers are on there.

Not sure I've ever heard anyone call Newfies agressive either.

That list is dumb.

I've seen more aggressive labs than I have pits while working at an animal shelter. I will say that's the most extensive list I've seen thus far.

Labs are at the top of a lot of bite lists. But if I remember correctly. The determining factor for this list wasn't aggression as much as how much damage could be inflicted in an attack. I can't remember the original source but I have seen this list before.

Geico just lists "mastiff" on their list of dogs to watch for.

Having said that feel free to tell your vet to take a hike. Neutering him isn't going to affect whether he's aggressive or not.

I also have to note that several vets and techs have told me that they worry much more about the Goldens, Labs, and toy breeds biting than any of the supposed "aggressive breeds". They all agreed that the mastiffs and pits and the like will generally either bite or not in a very predictable manner (which makes it easy to manage), where the badly bred and poorly handled Goldens, Labs, and toy breeds can be extremely unpredictable and thus prone to snapping with no warning.

Absolutely agree. We used to argue over who'd have to do intake on new dogs if they were labs with a bad history or just toy breeds "that only liked their owners".

Yes. The few times Mateo has been in a scuff up, one was a black lab, and another a Golden with a history of being very aggressive and unpredictable. I talked with a breeder I knew about what happened with the Golden and she said it didn't surprise her at all. Mostly due to overbred lines creating unstable temperaments. And there's a lot of them out there...
