Advice on how to clip black nails safely please

that black pulp is really easy to see when you lay the dog on there back between your legs. Sounds scetchy , but it has worked wonderful for our house. I have had the fortune of three black nailed dogs. took me some time to get a style of cutting down that bored the dogs. when using clippers you can also GENTLY press in that pulp area and feel the difference between the dead tissue(lighter color and flaky) and the living pulp ( darker and Alive) . most pups once they get used to you, will gently tug if you touch that live pulp, as it is sensitive. Be gentle above all. Oh yeah , that was a great video on that DMikeM

I plan on getting out the dremel and just letting him get used to the sound, etc. Then I will try to use it on him!

Oh I wish. I get attacked if we try to go towards her feet with an object in our hands now. We used to do it in her sleep (one at a time), but now she's on to us again and will wake up and snap at us even if we just put our hand on her to pet her while she's sleeping. So the ambush route backfired on us. So it is now a lot of running back and forth on the driveway and nail breakages as they happen. Never had a dog like this before. She's psychotic about it.

sounds like you have a training problem. If my dogs ever snapped at me we would have a problem. Either the dog learns I am the boss by training or it will have to be PTS. I could bite Jade's feet and she would barely react at all. I had her trained to accept the dremel in 3 sessions or less.

Careful with the dremmel, it can get hot!

As a vet tech and a groomer over the course of 8 years I've learned to master what I like to call the "shaving technique": take a little bit off at a time until you see what looks like a bullseye, once you see the bullseye, stop! That's the head of the quick.

Maybe I'll make a video and post it because I'm sure this makes no sense lol

Ferae I thought about making a video as well as I was a groomer for 2 years. However I don't currently have access to a dog that has been conditioned to accepting the dremmel. 2 of them would probably bite the snot out of me & the other one might just pee herself. They handle the normal clippers well though!
