Adjustment period?

Oscar's been doing great recently ... still getting along great with the cats and met my friend's black Lab yesterday for the first time yesterday (he was a perfect gentleman!). He's learning fast with us and his personality is just wonderful!

My problem is that he's not really eating yet. We chalked the first couple of days up to stress of a new environment, but I'm not sure how long that's supposed to last. Ebony ate like a horse from the first day we brought her home so it's odd for me to see Oscar turn his nose up. When we brought him home, the shelter sent along 15 cups of their food (of which he'd been eating 8 cups a day) to help transition him to what we had (Nutro Venison and Brown Rice). He nibbled unenthusiastically at both types. We even tried feeding him JUST the shelter kibble (Purina) and JUST the Nutro. I added liquid beef bullion one day and peanut butter another day but he doesn't want it. If I act like i'm eating WITH him (dig around in the kibble, make munchy noises) he'll take a few bites. We feed twice a day and if I had to guess I'd say he was eating maybe a cup each time.
Funny thing is he doesn't ACT hungry. He doesn't beg at all, even when I'm working in the kitchen with raw food. He'll take bits from me (like last night: made jambalaya and shared the sausage and chicken with the cats/dog) and will still devour cheese pieces (training) and Beggin' Strips. He's got plenty of energy. His first order of business in the morning isn't breakfast, it's a long walk around the neighborhood followed by rehydration and a solid nap.

I'm not really sure what to make of it. When Ebony was ill she drank like a fish and wouldn't even take treats. Oscar's drinking normally and will eat treats and other "people food" but won't touch his kibble. Is he just a ridiculously picky eater? Still adjusting to the new digs? Or should I be genuinely worried? He doesn't look like he's "wasting" at all and like I said he's full of energy (when he's not asleep on the couch).

As long as he doesn't stop dropping dangerous amounts of weight and energy is still good and he has a clean bit of health I would let him eat what he wants, maybe he takes longer to adjust or maybe you are lucky with one of those mastiffs that self regulate their feeding so they always have a wonderful figure ;) One of those would be great in our house...where as at the moment everyone eats like they are starving :(

Did they free feed at the shelter? Could he just need time to adjust to having specific "meal times" instead of just eating a bite here and there?

An egg will always get mine to eat!! He is on some medicine right now cause some how his toe bone got chipped and the medicine requires it to be taken with food or on a full stomach. I mix some of his food with an egg that I cooked and he eats his whole bowl and then I can give him his medicine. Granted your dog is not on medicine but it might make him interested. We have also done chicken broth. He got over that really quickly though. Good luck!! :)

BlackShadow: I thought about that, it just seems extremely unusual for such a big fella to only eat a cup or two a day. He's three so I realize his "growth spurt" phase should be done with, but still ... Would be nice to have an easy keeper though ;)

Ellen: I asked and they said they'd been doing split feeding (morning/night) like we do. Just as an added precaution though, we left his food out so he could browse if he wanted to but no dice. The cats saw an opportunity for free kibble-snacks and sometimes stole a quick bite, but mostly it was open if he wanted it. At day's end we'd throw out what wasn't eaten, so he didn't have to try and eat "stale" food.

Suzu: Have not tried the egg trick yet. Ebony loved eggs but they gave her horrible gas so we stopped feeding them. He didn't go for the beef broth, but I haven't tried chicken yet so maybe for the next feeding.

We haven't tried raw food yet, someone mentioned SatinBalls when Ebony was declining but I never got to try and make them. Sounds like a project! He appears to like fish okay (I tried adding canned tuna to his food, he picked out the fish and left the kibble), so maybe a fatty fish like that will help also. I certainly hope he picks up an appetite soon ... would hate to bring him to the vet with a complaint so soon!

Alright, I drafted a friend of mine on Saturday and we made Satin Balls! We tweaked the recipe a little bit (mostly in quantities, since I had an odd amount of burger and didn't want leftover molasses or wheat germ) under the CLOSE supervision of Oscar. He was a good boy and didn't beg, but was obviously interested in what we were doing smooshing our hands around in giant bowls that smelled so good ...
It made about 160 meatball-sized Balls which we froze on cookie sheets. Oscar loves them! He had a couple right away as part of the taste test. Later on when I took them out of the freezer to bag up, I dropped one on the floor and it was quickly snapped up - still frozen. He mouthed it a little bit, chewed enthusiastically, then downed it.
He hasn't really eaten much more kibble ... he's a little better at it but still is only taking in about 1.5-2 cups twice a day. He's still looking great, no ribs or other bones poking out, tons of energy (at least two long walks a day and some throw-the-ball in the backyard if he's bouncing off the walls). Still ZERO food aggression, no begging for scraps (although he'll take whatever you give him and of course anything that hits the floor), etc.

Is it possible he's just the most mellow dog, food-wise? I'm going to give him a Ball every day and see how it goes. I'd swear he's the picture of perfect health (even his dandruff is going away), so maybe the amount of food isn't really that important ...

I think if he is doing great and has a clean bill of health then let him be :) He sounds like he is adjusting well and having a great time getting used to you guys and your schedule. I think you might have lucked out and just have an easy keeper. One of the puppies that we kept isn't huge on downing food either which of course can make you a little nervous with a young puppy but she is in good shape, eats what she wants at meal times, doesn't try to take anything from her brother's dish so she isn't being fussy. We try to make sure she is eating a good amount but the vet says she is good and she is still gaining fine, she just runs non-stop so sometimes can seem a little more ribby than her brother.

PS we are making satin balls this weekend for treats so I am sure that it will be an interesting weekend. I have been trying to decide how much to make and think I am going to double the batch (just due to the number of dogs and me not wanting to have to make them too often lol!)

It was actually a lot of fun to make them ... like I said we tweaked things to use up all the supplies so it was exactly one box of Total, one bottle of molasses, one jar of wheat jerm, etc. No complaints from Oscar yet ;)
