Acute itchy ear

What could cause an acute itchy ear?
Kryten suddenly started shaking his head violently and scratching his ear. No work up, just wake up and start scratching. By the time I got to him he had caused skin damage to the inside of the flap and surrounding area, enough so that his entire inner ear was bloody. I managed to clean it up, no cuts just scratched off skin, and it doesn't look like it was dirty. I covered the entire area with polysporin, the one I have has pain and itch fighters. It's been about an hour and we are now down to the occasional head shake and no scratching. Also he seemed to cause himself to overheat during this episode, based off of panting and his desire to try and lie down in Jiggers' pool, so I also gave him a cold bath. I've never seen him that uncomfortable before and that includes post surgery and the initial injury that prompted his diagnosis.

I'd guess some sort of bug in the ear and/or a bite of some sort, too...
Glad it's doing better!

Coconut oil is a great healer-helper, too. Very soothing (or so I've thought) on cuts.
