A mouthy little (Big) PUNK!

Well I made my first attempt last night to put Ruger in a different room and close the door when he started being mouthy...YIKES!!! I don't think he has ever even been in a different room than I was unless he fell asleep and I walked out of the room (On the occasion that he doesn't wake up and follow me.) What happened next was crazy. He sounded like a rabid animal on the other side of the door and truly lost his cool.....I opened the door because I am unwilling to sacrifice my bedroom door for the cause and i just looked at him....He sat down, did the head dip and gave me a puppy bark!! I couldn't decide if I wanted to throat punch him or hug his big slobbery head! (For the record, throat punch was a joke, I would never physically hurt Ruger) So, we are back to ignoring which of course means I am back to listening to him run his mouth until he is damn good and ready to shut up.....Sigh. I have never seen anything like it!! I actually did some training with him last night after his "explosion" and I would give the command and he would immediately do it and the whole time he was barking directly at me.......My dog is an absolute nut!!! :)
Your welcome!! I'll be interested in hearing how the approach works for Ruger

This is EXACTLY what Ruger is doing. I am back on the road to ignoring him and I am doing the same, treating when he stops but I honestly don't think it is making any diffeence to him at all....LOL When he is ready, he shuts up!! I am just going to be happy that he is so well behaved otherwise, give up having a phone conversation EVER and hope that eventually he says everything he has to say!! :) That is the problem...it is so loud!!! You can easily ignore a little puppy bark but he is using his big boy voice when he does it and it drowns out EVERYTHING!!Temper Tantrum really does explain it best.....
HA HA.. I laugh only because Gunner does it! ALOT . He started doign it every so often when he was about 5 months, then it stopped. Now he is about 10 months'ish, and it has begun again but a lot louder... it is honestly like a little kid having a temper tantrum!!! still does what he is told but does it while barking like a total moron! He looks at me and barks his face off, tail wagging, almost smiling .. but barking a steady bark.. what a dork! I have tried, in the beginning when I first got him at around 5 mnths of age, when he started this, to put him in a different room and shut him out, but he had some severe separation anxiety so that just works him up and he only stops barking because he is tired, not because he has made choice to stop... SOOOO Whatworked and again has been working lately has been , when he starts it I stop everything immediately and ignore him, I mean totally ignore him, I do not look at him, I walk through him, I pretend like he is not there (TOTALLY HARD since he is like yours, my shadow). I just go about my business, it lasts about 25 minutes and then when he has relaxed I will treat him and then proceed with making him sit, shake, stay, lay down whatever I chose to do.

It ishard to stand there and listen while your dog barks at you... I try not to laugh at Gunner because he really does look like a cheeky monkey having a tantrum!

Mine can be a pain he is entering a phase now at 9 months but to be honest barking isnt one of them I have to actually ask him to talk to me to get him to bark, he is the more silent yet destructive type, lost bits of my wall so far some shoes and 2 T.V remotes and various items posted through my letter box. The other thing is he has always been so soft to the point of letting every dog bully him and the husky used to be a bit dominant next door when they would play but now he has out grown everything in the area he is starting to come into his own which in truth I dont like Id rather he always remained a total softy.

The other day a quite large golden retriever took a dislike to marley was chasing him around snarling and taking nips at him well Marley had enough reared up toppled the Golden onto its back then sat on him no joke he wasnt even growling making a noise in fact he looked like he had found a nice sofa or warm spot to sit he was so calm but of course the poor Golden wasnt so amused being used as a cushion. Sigh..........

Oh my!!! How funny, I can picture him sitting on top of the golden!! :) The destructive stuff is horrible, I remember it from all those years ago when I got my first Pit Puppy. I am fortunate that I take Ruger to work with me everyday so I don't really have anything of this because I know it will drive you crazy. I do have to shut the bathroom doors, even when I am home with him because his favorite thing to do is to grab the toilet tissue on the roll and pull it through the house! :)

HA HA!~ yes sounds exactly like Gunner!!!! I am thinking of investing in ear plugs for his tantrums!! It truly is a battle of who can outlast who! I think you have the same issue as me, Gunner is with me ALL THE TIME, and he is definately demanding, he wants what he wants when he wants it, and sometimes he doesn't even know what he wants, except that I am doing dishes and not looking at him or petting him or holding his disgusting nylabone for him for he chews it.... LOL.... I have created a spoiled, although very obedient, brat!

Exactly!!! Spoiled little punk but yes, incredibly well behaved except for that he is demanding and loud!!! Funny you should mention ear plugs....I do alot of shooting at the range so I happen to have some and last night when he was having his tantrum I stuck them in and ignored him! LOL I guess I will just never have another phone conversation? :) At least I know I am not alone!
