A dream or a scream...?

I often see and feel Bailey having dreams, she's shake the bed with what looks like she's running and chasing something and she'll growl and bark occasionally, and, yes, sometimes it's more of a wimper, but last night was different. I woke up to a wail, a long, trailing wail as if she'd been stabbed or something. I've never heard anything like it come out of her.

What would you make of something like this? She woke up as I talked to her and rubbed her, but I wasn't able to really rest afterwards, I was constantly checking on her. Have you ever heard of something like this? She's always dreaming, but I've been woken up by something so scary coming out of her before.

I'm always careful about her health, I haven't noticed anything changing or any worrisome behaviour.

I occasionally have nightmares or...perhaps more adequately described as disturbing dreams with implossible story lines, perhaps our pets can have nightmares, but, how would she have ever come to fear something she's never experienced...I mean, supposedly they are less complicated than us, less able to project a possible scenario, and she's never been terrified, to my knowledge, or fearful of anything. Do you think there could be some underlying pain syndrome? Or am I, as I suppose, just an over anxious pet mamma....Helicopter mom?

Charlie, dreams more than any other dog I've ever had.

He runs, he wags his tail, he whimpers, growls and barks, and shlurps in his sleep as if he's still being breast fed, he makes little yodeling sounds and wrinkles his face up. Once in a while he cries a bit, at which point I say his name and he calms down again.

What he does most in his sleep however, is snore. Holy crow, can this puppy SNORE!!!

Carson runs ,barks, whimpers, growls, cries and occasionally howls, a real long low to high lonely sound. The first time I heard it I didn't even know what it was. And like Elana P said he sure can snore !

The only time I ever hear Kryten howl is while asleep. He is very vocal and active while sleeping. Sometimes he does seem panicked but calling his name or resting a foot against him calms him.
As for snoring he literally rattles the house. It took us a few times to figure out that the rumble we heard downstairs was him asleep upstairs on the living room floor.

Thanks Everybody! I was really worried, but I guess I was over reacting. Bailey sleeps with me and usually her body (mastiff style) is pressed up against me so I feel every dream, the running and wiggling and I hear all the growls and whimpers, but, that long wailing howl sounded like she was in pain or dying.
Last night we had another one, not howling, but jerking spasmodically and at a high speed. I thought she was having a seizure, but she responded to being touched and talked to, so I calmed down.
I don't know why, all of a sudden, she's having such violent dreams. I hope for the sake of my sleep that it calms down soon.

So watching Ruger sleeping over here gave me the notion to search dreaming on the forum to see what others had to say about it. I'm definitely guilty of videoing my dog for 3+ minutes while he sleeps... He cought me and seemed annoyed. Ahhh he's so dreamy...lol. well It's obvious I'm headed for the title of crazy dog lady... better than crazy cat lady I guess... Lol rofl lol.... no offense.20180407_084321.jpg 20180407_090444.jpg 20180407_090722.jpg 20180407_090748.jpg

Yes Ruger is so cute! Bella has done the crying out in her sleep as well. I noticed it during this summer. As I don't take her to work with me when it's too hot out. As soon as I was taking her with me again the nightmares seem to stop. So I just thought it was separation anxiety.

Both of mine are active dreamers. Kahlua dreams more than Diesel it seems. But, I have heard both of them woof in their sleep. Diesel often wags his tail in his sleep and that makes me so happy because I can tell he is having a happy dream. I have seen them both "run" in their sleep while dreaming. Kahlua often suckles in her sleep so I know she dreams about breast feeding a lot which is not a surprise for my food obsessed girl. Very rarely they whimper and twitch spastically in their sleep and these I know are nightmares (or assume).

I have also heard of other dogs screaming in their sleep. They call it night terrors and it is more common for dogs that have been abused. But, there could be something she saw or experienced that really disturbed her that she she is reliving in her sleep. Didn't she get bit by a duck once and seemed terrified of the bush the duck was in after? Maybe she is recalling the big old scary duck? Maybe she is remembering being sad when you go to work?

Kahlua has many weird fears so when she has nightmares I assume she is being attacked by feathers. She is terrified of feathers. Diesel doesn't whimper. He woofs. So I assume he is dreaming of protecting us being that he is always on alert and looking for threats.

I have vivid nightmares and have my whole life and I read a study once that dogs have the cognitive ability of say a six year old. I had plenty of terrifying dreams as a six year old. Mostly they involved spiders that grew and grew until they were the size of buildings and tried to eat me. Perhaps Bailey dreamed that the mean duck grew and grew and grew... I also saw a recent study that proved that dogs do have long term memory that they can recall easily so it is perfectly possible that some small thing that upset or scared her at some point could be bothering her for some reason. Maybe she saw or smelled something that reminded her of the scary experience.

Ruger is adorable. I always take pictures of mine sleeping too. If you are a crazy dog lady then I think you are in good company here. ;-)

The twitching and running in place is a major reason I do not allow Mr. Chev on the bed or the couch....he runs in place chasing dream-time chipmunks or cats just fine !!

hahaha the first time I was pup sitting my dads Hogan I felt my bed upstairs vibrating ... my thought was as I woke up ... are we having an earthquake?
I sat up and then noticed the tremors coincided with Hogans snoring hahaha
