6 weeks pregnant and vomiting

Hello everyone. I have an english mastiff that is pregnant with her first litter. She is 6 weeks along and has starting vomiting about once a day for the last 5 days. There has been food in the vomit but also some bile and last night it was all bile. we visited the vet today and he gave her some wormer and did some bloodwork that we are waiting for the results of. he wanted to do an ultrasound to make sure that pups were not dying in the womb, but the machine was being used on a farm call and was unavailable. he didn't seem too concerned about it, but i am still worried. Has anyone else had this issue? Any advice would be helpful!

Thanks!!!

Some dogs will vomit during pregnancy and some won't. I would recommend feeding her in very small portions several times a day. If she eats twice a day, feed her 4 times a day. If she eats 3 times a day, feed her 6 times a day. That sort of thing. Keep her exercise levels to a minimum right before and after she eats. Also, follow the advice of the vet and see if there are any supplements he thinks you should be following.

If you haven't already, get a book for more information on whelping and raising a litter. I am not sure if this was a planned breeding or not but most books will cover the topic of vomiting and what you need to do to keep your dog safe during whelping. I have a very good book on breeding that was written by a vet who shows and breeds dogs but my friend has it right now. It has everything you can imagine in it but I purchased it years ago (about a decade ago) and I can't remember the name of it. Find one that has been written currently by someone who knows about breeding and caring for all the dogs involved.

I was also wondering if you did the health checks and tests before breeding as there are a number of diseases a dog can get when they are being bred that can affect the litter.

That is good. I thought it was your young female and that had me worried. Tons of concerns if they are too young.

her bloodwork checked out ok. she was given some med to help reduce the acid in her belly and it has helped. no more vomiting and her appetite is back. we have an X-ray scheduled for the 30th
