This is just a starting point for people who may be overwhelmed by the options available. However, just because it's on this list does not mean it's an option for every dog. Every dog and every breed at that has different needs, especially giant breed pups.

Wellness and Orijen do off the top of my head. Orijen is pretty expensive though. Chicken Soup has a large breed puppy as well. Giant breed puppies such as mastiffs should be on a quality adult or all life stages food. Certain formulas of Canidae, Acana, Orijen and Taste of the Wild are examples of all life stages foods that are appropriate for mastiff pups.

I do have to chime in as I'm not the only one who experienced this... read the label. Large & giant breeds have an issue digesting chicken fats... it causes diarreha. It cannot be in the top 8 ingredients. I had 2aistlin on Diamond large breed puppy /amb & rice (27% protein, 15% fat, 342 calories per cup) and was topping with (diamond brand) Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and he had very runny stools until I took him off it. Others I know had the same issue with chicken fat as a main ingredient.

The ratio of calcium to phosphorus is very important as well. Chicken is a common allergen in many dogs, as well as corn among other things.

Eagle Pack does have a Giant Breed Puppy that is the only puppy formula really appropriate for Mastiff pups. I feed Taste of the Wild Sierra Mountain but Sierra Mountain is the only Taste of the Wild formula appropriate for a mastiff puppy. You could also feed Acana Pacifica or Wild Prairie. The Orijen all life stages is good except for the Regional Red but it is expensive. The Petcurean Now Adult grain free is okay for giant breeds as is Fromm Surf and Turf. I'm not sure what Eagle Pack Giant breed costs as our feed store doesn't have it but price wise the lower end of the spectrum would be Taste of the Wild. There may be more on this list but these formulas are what I'm familiar with.

it is like 37 for a big bag. Do you think I should keep her on that?[/QUOTE
The review on dogfoodanalysis.com gave it 4 stars but said it could use more meat. It's a middle of the road food. It's definitely not bad for her but does have a couple ingredients that are unnecessary or known allergens. I think it's really up to you. How is she doing on it? How's her stool? Coat? Any itching or hair loss? If it seems like she's doing well and likes it I don't really see a problem with it.

Long term or to transition? When transitioning puppies you should always mix the old food with the new food gradually to get the puppy's system used to it. The first 3-5 days give 75% old, 25% new, the next 3-5 50% old 50% new and then finally 25% old and 75% new for 3-5 days before going to 100% new. If you're talking long term I suppose you could but personally I'm not a fan. I like to know exactly what food causes issues if something were to happen.

I was thinking long term. I like the better quality in Sierra Mountain but that Eagle Pack is more specialized for puppy? I just can't decide.

You really don't need a puppy formula period. Taste of the Wild is an all life stages food which means it's nutritionally good for puppies right up to senior dogs. In general puppy formulas are a gimmick as are senior formulas. They cost more and are almost identical to adult formulas and all life stage formulas. I only mentioned Eagle Pack because so many people buy large breed puppy foods for their giant breed puppies and Eagle Pack is the only one to have an actual Giant Breed Puppy formula.

Just wanted to add to this that recently some lesser quality foods have been recalled for Aflatoxin which is a corn fungus that can be lethal to dogs. While Taste of the Wild has not been recalled yet they are made by the same company and possibly in the same factories as some of these foods so I have transitioned my dogs over to Earthborn Holistics. The ingredients and price are very similar to Taste of the Wild. Taste of the Wild is still currently a good food, but I personally do not feel comfortable feeding it any longer.
