2 cats die after eating tainted Diamond food

Truthaboutpetfood.com makes a point I missed. The report states that employees were handling animal fat and animal digest. None of the recalled foods are listed as containing those products. Since both products are considered extreamly low grade and to often contain parts of euthanized animals it makes you wonder huh?

I just don't see how salmonella is going to kill a cat or a dog... I mean I raw feed my dog and give the cats raw food if they will eat it and salmonella isn't something I worry about.. These two cats in the article were in a shelter so maybe they already had something wrong with them? They speculate that the cats got sick from the food but they give no proof of it. I've been feeding raw for at least a year and I have yet to get sick from handling the meat or touching my dog.

I do have a problem with the company if they are putting animal fat and animal digest in these foods without putting it in the ingredient list... I hope this isn't going on and I do believe it should be looked into.

its often an animal who's got a compromised immune system in the first place, but sometimes it'll be a particularly bad form of salmonella, in this case I'm pretty sure it was listed as being a less common form and so the animals in question may have been reasonably healthy but their systems weren't able to cope with that particular form. There are tests that can be performed to confirm the presence of that particular strain in the animal (usuall a fecal sample test), but I don't know if they did it in the case of these cats.

Cats and dogs can get very sick from salmonella. It usually manifests as severe diarrhea and vomiting which unless the shelter has someone there 24/7, and most do not may have progressed far enough to be irreversible thus causing death. I know at the shelter I work at we only have someone there from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Animals often have diarrhea and vomiting from the stress of being in a shelter and it sounds like by the time they realized it wasn't for kennel stress it was too late. I really think Diamond needs to spend some time firing people and working on their facilities. Even then though, it's unlikely I would ever use a diamond product again.

I will still use diamond naturals and recommend it... I will always feed raw but so far no other brand is as cost effective and easily available. the average dog owner will not spend a lot of money on dog food...

I have a tom cat (stray) that I vet and feed that lives on my porch.. He has cat aids and always has diarrhea. He is fed kibbled cat food because he isn't a fan of real food but I honestly would feed him raw if he would eat it and not worry about his pooping issue being any worse than it already is.. He's had gaping disgusting oozy wounds multiple times but always pulled though even though he has aids.. I see him and see what he can fight through and can't imagine how Salmonella is going to kill a healthy cat.
