10 Month Old Dogue Pup and the dreaded Hip dyplasia diagnosis

I can see the limp and his hips are little high. I hope someone who has had a pup with hip dysplasia will post a reply. You're keeping him thin which is great for his joints. My hope is that once his bones are finished growing, his hips will be ok and his limp, if it's pano, should disappear in a couple of months. Mastiffs continue to grow until 2-3 years of age.

I hope so too! He's lost about 6kgs from refusing to eat. I just don't want to be cruel to him.. Going to get him a new super padded bed too.. To make him more comfortable

So sad! I can clearly see that his gait is not normal. I heard that yogurt is not good for pano due to the excess calcium causing rapid growth?

You are right, Linda (Hector). I guess the calcium levels would be low if given a small amount of yogurt + calcium in the food which she feeds raw. Check the calcium levels in the amount of yogurt you are giving him.

These are the levels of calcium: Calcium & Phosphorous Requirements for Dogs

He should be at about 1.0-1.8 of calcium in his diet but may want to decrease that. What's your thoughts, Linda?

BTW, Linda for bringing the yogurt thing to my attention. I was trying to help her out with the dog's digestive system since he's on anti-inflammatory and got some type of injection for demodex. So much you have to remember.

Thanks again!

I checked raw pumpkin and it has 24 mg of calcium per 100 mg of pumpkin. It might be better to do a probiotic instead of food, i.e. yogurt/pumpkin.

Great idea, Suanne! I read the Dogs Naturally article and I think I'll do some for Titan. It also sounds like it's great for stomach upset too. Maybe try this hectorthefrenchmastiff. Can't hurt.

I have no experience with hip dysplasia but unfortunately I do know about elbow dysplasia. Kryten (EM) was diagnosed with bilateral ED when he was 15 months and had surgery to fixate the mobile chuck of bone in his left elbow at 16 months. nothing surgical has been done to correct the right leg because it isn't causing him problems yet. Dogs are far more resilient than humans and what may cause quality of life issue for a person doesn't even registrar on their radar. The only supplement that Kryten gets daily is coconut oil. I don't know how it works but if i miss a day or two his limp returns full force, with it he only limps after extreme exertion.

No problem Deb, you're doing great! I only remember the yogurt calcium part from a thread that Mike mentioned that the yogurt might have contributed to Jade's pano.

His name is Hector. But we call him fat boy haha. We took him to a normal vet but now I am looking for the orthopaedic list to find one close to me
I am so appreciative for everyone's help! Thank you so much

Glad to hear you are taking Hector to a Ortho vet, with the back arched like that I wonder if it is a spine/back issue. If he had a blown knee and sever hip dysplasia I would think he would have a real hard time getting up and moving, but then I'm not a veterinarian. Let us know what you find out!:)

I think the roach back and hip set might not be because of his problems , I've had dogs with that conformation that didn't have any problems .....I've yet to see one with that conformation that moves well though ........... looks like his left leg bothers him ...... i'd worry more about the cruciate than the hips ........ I've seen some severely dysplastic hips , djd , last a ddb 6-7yrs ...... I've seen extremely loose hips remain decent looking and last a ddb 10-12yrs with proper exercise .... does he have to do stairs ??? it's ashame about the cruciate , the ones I've seen heal up on their own required a long period of rest .... and I believe the hd requires as much low impact exercise as the dog is capable of ....personally i'd walk him on flat even surfaces ....... teaching him to swim would be a good form of exercise ......I have an 8 yr old dogue that hurt her shoulder a year ago , the vet told me to give her a supplement called phycox , she is a really large ddb , and it seems to be working for her .....good luck , hope it works out for him .....
